Hello fellow piano-maniacs,

After doing some research, I just purchased an M-Audio Axiom 49-key MIDI keyboard. I am planning to take it with me to my business trips, connect to my laptop and keep up with my piano practice. It's a semi-weighted keyboard and should be just fine for my purposes.

In my research I discovered Pianoteq Play, which is supposed to be a pretty good standalone software for practicing the piano. I haven't bought it yet ($99), but I downloaded he demo version and it sounds pretty impressive.

I am looking for some additional software suggestions/recommendations before I drop the cash for Pianoteq. Is there anything else in that price range ($100-200)? While in the immediate future I am planning to use the keyboard just for piano practice, I may want to experiment with sequencing etc later on, so it would be nice to find a software with relatively good piano voices that can take full advantage of Axiom's capabilities.

Apprieciate your pointing me to the right direction. Thanks!

To clarify: I am using a PC with Win 7. My M-Audio Axiom 49 comes with Ableton Live Lite, which does not seem to have piano sounds.

Is there a DAW software around $100-200 with good piano voice that I should invest in and take full advantage of my Axiom 49, or should I pay $99 for Pianoteq, which will be just for playing, not song recording.

Thanks.

The answers to all of your questions depend on your personal preferences. It sounds odd that Ableton Live Lite would not come with a piano sound, but even if it didn't you should be able to download this for free.

Well pianoteq if you don't care too much about the tone and just the playability, I've tried Pianoteq, personally its unrealistic tone doesn't inspire me too practice on. My favorites are Alicia's Keys, the Vintage D, and Sampletekks Black Grand.

Thanks, drexel.

Not sure if the Free Live Pack works with the Lite version, but I will give it a try.

In terms of personal preferences, I want a "good" piano sound, but I am not obsessed about it since this will be my "travel" practice setup to be used in hotel rooms with headphones. I don't expect too much.

Thanks Mavs972,

I found Pianoteq to be more than adequate for my travel practice needs. Also, its small footprint (about 20MB) makes it ideal for use on a work laptop.

I am just wondering whether I should pull the trigger on Pianoteq (ideal for my needs but doesn't do much more than play piano) or look for a DAW in that price range that would include a "good" piano voice for my practice..

I have the same setup as you. The pianoteq is fine for practice. One nice thing is the simple built-in midi recorder. Since you only have 49 keys you can record one hand and play along with the other fairly easily.
