Curious as I am, I measured it today for my KAWAI CP136.
I used an oscilloscope and measured the peak levels.
Volume was set to max and I used middle C with medium velocity (yes the organ is velocity sensitive) and the BE3 Organ sound.

Under this conditions I got on the headphone output about 1V.
At the Line out I got 100mV.

At the Kawai forum the officals said this is a level for professional Audio systems. But they never tell you numbers...
I think most Kawai and Yamha pianos are similar in this aspect, but I must admit, I dont kow. But I know most people have similar problems to connect external amplifiers.

I never measured this for my Yamaha CVP 96, but I know that this produced similar levels, because it sounded with the same loudness under comparative conditions.

I have also a m-Audio Prokeys88sx and I tested this with maximum Volume, Organ sound and middle c and moderate velocity.

This produced 300mV, same Voltage at Headphone Output and at Line Output.

Now, these are facts.

Now we need an m-Audio specialist and an Kawai specialist and an Yamaha specialist, those should explain this.

Now, lets look to the specs of a Roland Keyboard Amplifier:
http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=698&ParentId=418

They specify -20dBu for all inputs. I wouldnt be too surprised if the RD700 where compatible to this amplifier..
Now look here: http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-db-volt.htm

-20dBu is roughly equivalent to 100mV peak.

It seems to be a fact that many (semi)professional stage amplifiers have an input level in the magnitude order of 100mV.
I dont know if there is an ISO standard for this.

So my conclusion is: First try the lineout. If this doesnt work or gives bad SNR (Signal Noise Ratio), then triy the headphone output. This should work with any standard HiFi or Computer audio amplifier. A level mismatch of factor 3 or 4 is easily compensated with proper Volume adjustment, this shouldnt be a problem.

Thats what I always said from day 1 on and it is still true.. ;-)

Very nice and detailed analysis Peter. Now I understand your initial comment, you are talking about measured levels, not about the typical standard levels that should be in specifications.

In my setup, Roland FP-7 + Mackie 801VLZ3 Mixer + Macckie MR-8 monitors, I have levels as follows:
In Roland FP-7: line output level: 0dB in settings ("Adjusting the Volume - Master Gain"). Volume Knob: maximum
In Mackie 801VLZ3 Mixer: DP channel: maximum (+10dB). Output to monitors: variable according level I want.
In Mackie MR8 monitors: in the middle.

I would like to put +10dB in DP and 0dB in mixer (DP channel), but DP do not store thet setting after power down, and it is not practical to adjust the Volume-Master Gain each time I power up the DP.
