Hello everyone,

I'm planning on playing the synthesizer part for an upcoming local production of Little Shop of Horrors, and the keyboard Synth's score in a few of the numbers calls for a "slide whistle" sound, mainly used in the title song Little Shop of Horrors and the plant's wilting noises.

I was just wondering the following are there any synthesizers (preferably vintage- early 1980s) or sampling programs (through Native Instruments/Kontakt) that have a slide whistle sound in their sound banks?

I have seen and listened to all of the samplings and descriptions of the most famous synths I can think of from that time: the Yamaha DX7, and the Roland D-50 and although I have indeed found "Whistle" tones, the actual 'slide' isn't believable with my pitch bend on my Roland 700GX.

Normally, I'm not such a purist, but these little instrumentations in Alan Menken's score make it 110% more quirky and interesting.

I've even thought about just buying a slide whistle to make the sound (I have nothing else to do for 7 measures), but the pitches are written on the staff and the score indicates the use of a pitch bend, which means there must be some keyboards that have this sound.

Ideas? Thanks in advance!!!

-Russ

Can you provide an example of the sound you're after?
A clip on YouTube perhaps?

Cheers,
James

Kontact has it ....can't remember the patch name. Also the motif has one too....
And you can do it on almost any analog or modeled synth ...or any softsynth

The original score of the OBC recording doesn't have it prominently featured like I've heard in other productions and recordings.

I have an 11 second clip on YouTube for reference:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXyu5OC2SqQ

Also, if possible, I'd like to produce the sound in real-time live during the performance, so as ideal as using a player such as Kontakt to make the sound, there's always that 1 second delay between the striking of the key and the sounding of the note with midi.

Thanks to everyone again,
-Russ

Ah, I see, thanks for the clip.

Regarding the 1 second delay in Kontact (?), could you perhaps press the key 1 second early?

Alternatively, some instruments allow .wav files to be played back (and assigned to a key), so even if you cannot generate the exact sound on your board, it may be possible to get the same effect using a pre-made audio file.

Cheers,
James

I have Kontakt 2 player, but when I tried opening the file, it didn't work frown

Anyone else have any ideas?
