I didn't know that this popular song, All By Myself, done by Eric Carmen and later Celine Dion was largely based on the 2nd movement of Sergei Rachmaninoff's, Piano Concerto no 2. I thought it would be fun to tell anyone else who didn't know that about it. thumb

I remember listening to Rachmaninoff's Second at college and discovering that link myself. Wikipedia has a whole list for your reading pleasure. My favorite is probably Sting's quote of Prokofiev in "Russians".

These 3 words remind me more of Brisget Jones Diary opening scene than Rach no. 2 2nd movement! Hahaha!

Thanks for the links. I like Rachmaninov's better. I guess a pianist or any artist is making the same art over and over though and we all can be whittled down to three minutes of fame. I like that Eric Carmen song and the lyrics too.

Hi LindaR,

You'll also find another quote from Rachmaninoff's Symphony no. 2, the third movement "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" also done by Eric Carmen.

Actually, it now makes me wonder if he was a Classicists?

Best,

Anthony.

I didn't know Eric Carmen and Rachmaninoff's connection before. I guess they are classicists. I just confirmed by wikipedia that Clementi, Sonatina op 36 no 5 (Rondo Section) is Groovy Kind of Love performed by Phil Collins.
I knew that was fairly exact but I make close connections like Street of Laredo reminds me of Away in the Manger.

Nope, I've heard Phil Collins before but didn't know there was any connection between one of Clementi's Sonatas and his music!

Best,

Anthony.

I need to get more cultured, because all I can visualize after reading this thread is Eric Cartman singing a butchered rendition of this song on South Park.
