Impurities. Lead ore contains many other things and is difficult to refine. Therefore lots of lead is recycled. Stuff with battery acid and such. Then it's mixed together in a pot according to a recipe. Just like the way they make pot metal, if you have seen expanding action brackets. The reaction of the dissimilar metals and impurities causes the lead to swell. It really depends on where the piano company bought their lead and when.
