My student has left New Zealand to study (not music) at university in Singapore. She is 21 yrs old and has a diploma in modern piano. She sent me an email today with general news about how she is settling in, and she also said this “I went to practice music the other day - they have this rule that you can only use the music room once a week??! it is ridiculous - the whole process. And when I got in there… it was a keyboard… not a piano!”

Is there anyone in Singapore who could help by making a piano available for her to use sometimes or can anyone there offer any advice?

My contact details are in the web site below.

Could it be because she isn't a music student therefore the restriction? When I was in university (Melbourne), I was told I could use the practise room whenever they are free (which was very often) In Canada, I was told I was not allowed if I weren't a music student.

I don't know much about Singapore, but if it's anything like Malaysia, there should be plenty of private music schools and they at times rent music room for practise for a minimal fee when not used.

Another option to consider is perhaps taking a minor in music, therefore making herself a student in the music faculty? Even less, one or two elective subjects in music? A chat with the music faculty may bring out some options for her.

In case anyone ask, Malaysia is the country north of Singapore, which Singapore used to be a part of. And no, we don't live in the trees!

Thank you Tubbie0075 for your suggestions. I will pass these on to my student.

Also, I would like to make it clear that my student is very enthusiastic about Singapore. She is loving the experience, her course, and I think everything about it except for the problem about a piano.

Also, I am going to post my plea on the ABs Forum.
