I will be auditioning next year for a few conservatories, and just wanted to check over my audition works and see people's views on them.

Bach Prelude and Fugue #10 in E minor
Beethoven Sonata No. 5 (Op. 10 No. 1)
Chopin Ballade No. 1
Contemporary- Undecided (Any opinions)??
Chopin Etude (Undecided)
Rachmaninoff Etude Op. 39 No. 6

What are your guys's feelings? Do you have any opinions? Thank you so much for all of the input!

I think it's absolutely great what you have so far.

For contemporary, I think the best advice is 'whatever you'd like.' But if I have to give a suggestion, let me make it this set of pieces by my old teacher, Seymour Bernstein, "New Pictures at an Exhibition." I've performed some of them to great effect. The last two pieces, "Guernica" and "Epilogue," make a nice little set in themselves, lasting about 6 minutes (if you don't do the "poems" that come with it, which I didn't).
Here they are, played by someone else; I'd post mine if I had it. He plays it well but I think he kind of blows the opening; I tried to play it more softly and like it's emerging mysteriously from nowhere.

I consider "Contemporary" to be music written since 1960 or so; and "Modern" from 1900 - 1960. In that spirit, I recommend the following "Contemporary" works:

Toru Takemitsu -- "Far Away"
Richard Danielpour -- "Mardi Gras" or "Night",
from his "Enchanted Garden" suite
Stephen Paulus -- "Sprightly" and "Rollicking", from
his Five Preludes for Piano
John Adams -- "American Berserk"

Two Chopin Etudes that I particularly like are Numbers 8 and 10 from Opus 10. Either one I think would fit well in your overall program.

Sure, if the audition panel doesn't go nuts first after listening to nearly 5 minutes of that drivel.

Hmm...

Contemporary: Stella Sung's "Toccata for Piano" (I can e-mail you a recording and scan score for you if you'd like, it's not on YouTube).

I actually disagree. Its got a very different compositional intention behind it. If we got into discussing it though, this thread might get hijacked by Steve Reich. The OP probably needs more responses to his original questions, so I'll leave it at that.

Bach E minor is fine as long as they don't need a three-voice fugue.

I played Beethoven Op. 10/1 for my junior recital so that should be fine for an undergrad audition.

Ballade No. 1 poses as many musical problems as technical, so it's a good audition piece but also a very difficult one.

Rachmaninoff Op. 39/6, that's the "Red Riding Hood" one? Very tricky piece.. I take my hat off to anyone who can play it well.

Wow! What an incredible video. I love that piece but the idea of it being played by a single pianist seemed rather ludicrous lol.

Haha, I can think of far more obnoxious music than that. If you can't see the fascinating side of it I pity you.

Here at my university, there is a big promotion of new music, and yes, I've heard a whole lot "worse" than that!
