I found a 1975 42" Steinway console on consignment at a local music shop. Do you have any opinions on Steinway consoles manufactured in this time period? I have heard from one tech that the quality was sub-par during the late 60's and 70's. I'm looking for more opinions.

I played the piano and it sounded fine to me, but I am not an expert. The case is in very good shape and the inside was clean. The price on it is $5800 but the store owner says he thinks the owner will take an offer of $3K. Any opinions? Thanks!

All of the Steinways about 40" stem from the wartime Steinway design. I have always liked them, but they do tend to be fairly pricy. I think you should compare it with what you can get new for the same price, which is a good idea no matter what your price range or what you are considering buying.

Thank you. I am trying lots and lots of pianos. I have seen this model dating back to the 1930's, but my concern is how is the quality of the 1970's model? Is there any general consensus about it? Thanks!

$3K? From the 30s? Don't buy it.

Its actually a 1975 model. Any opinions on the quality of the 70's Steinway consoles?

In 20 years of being a piano technician, I've only encountered a handful of Steinway F consoles from the 1970s. They all looked nice and were clean inside. Other than that, they were remarkably unremarkable. For $3000 or more, you can do MUCH better. As an owner of one of those Steinway F's told me, "Steinway should be ashamed of putting their name on THAT piano."
