Since it is Liszt's 200th birthday this year, I would like to learn a hungarian rhapsody but have no idea about where to begin. I have fairly small hands.

If you have no idea where to begin, why do you feel it has to be a Hungarian Rhapsody. There are so very many Liszt pieces to choose from, many much better music than the Hungarian Rhapsodies.

I love the famous octave passage:

Good luck

The notes I handle no better than many pianists. But the pauses between the notes - ah, that is where the art resides! - Schnabel

I don't understand a question like this. If you are far along enough technically and musically to decide to learn a Liszt Rhapsody, SURELY, you have enough exposure and experience and interest to pretty much know WHERE TO BEGIN, unless you have just entered the world of classical music after years in another medium.

Also, small hands? You've heard of Daniel Barenboim, he must have the smallest (and chubbiest) hands of all-time. The point is, proper hand structure and positioning in technique development overcomes hand size, allowing the octave passages to be easily achievable.

Personally, I love #6. It offers a little of everything. I hate #2 now, thanks to Lang Lang. He's ruined it for everyone (just my opinion). good luck.

My first Hungarian Rhapsody was #3, and I have small hands too.
