I am still trying to find a good, fairly priced piano for may 2 children and have hopefully narrowed it down.

We have looked at a Kawai GE2 that the owner is asking $8900 which seems a little high and now we are planning to go look at this Yamaha G2R.
I am told it is a 1 owner, been played very little. It has been moved to Europe and back.
What should I be careful of and what is a fair price? The owner is asking $7500

Thanks

I believe the G2 series Yamaha grands were discontinued in 1991. "R" was the last itteration. Nervous about moisture conditions. Where in Europe did it live and for how long? How long here? Have a tech check it out. Might be a tad high for a private party.

Marty,

I am checking on the question you asked about where it lived and for how long.
Any ideas on the value of the Kawai 1995 GE2?
I am looking at 2 of those as well. One with the original owner for $8900 it is an A++ all around. The other $5500 from a dealer 3 hours away, it was one owner but that was a restaurant. It is a B- for case and overall condition.

Thanks
RonVF

Kawai GE2 5'7" was discontinued in 1995. This would match up with Kawai's GE30 5'5". These were/are the budget series in the Kawai line up.
Institutional (restaurant) pianos can be played five hours a day and five to six days a week. A lot of clock hours (miles) can be put on in a short period of time. Your A++ unit at $8900 would be a better pick if it checks out. I would still rather go for the Yamah G2 if it checks out. (Age is close, price is lower, better piano IMO)

Here is what I learned about the Yamaha that we will be looking at tomorrow evening.

"We bought the piano in January 1991 from a store in Freehold, NJ. We were told it was a "Metropolitan Opera Reserve" piano, and that is written on our sales receipt. I believe the piano was used for practice in the Opera Festival of New Jersey. We lived in London, England, from Aug 1992 to Aug 1993, and again from Aug 1998 to Nov 2000. For all the moves we had the piano professionally disassembled, crated, moved and reassembled. The piano was in heated storage from Nov 2000 to March 2001. Since then it has been in our home in upstate, NY."

Can you give me an idea of what would be a good price to pay for such a piano if it checks out. I woould have our piano tech check it out if my son likes it.

Thanks
RonVF

Went and checked out the G2 tonight. It looked great on the outside
My son played a few sons and he liked it and thought it sounded good.
After we were done with him playing I did lay down under it and found several cracks which promted me to open the lid and look closer inside with a flashlight. I found one crack from end to end up the center of the sound bourd and another up toward the top under the treble side, I couldn't really tell how big that one was.
My question is what does this do to the value and playabilty of the instrument?

Thanks
RonVF
