Not sure if anyone has the iRealBook app on iPhone, it's a fantastic little app - had hundreds of standards chord charts - really cool. But in a recent version they've outdone themselves with a feature which will actually play the backing/support for all the songs. It's not as advanced as some 'band in a box' type software of course, but an incredibly cool feature to have in something as portable as iPhone/iPod/iPad etc.

The iRealBook app itself plays songs with one 'style' by default, and you pay a few dollars extra to get the expansion which includes different rhtyhms/styles.

I often browse youtube for jazz songs etc, and a number of times now I've been able to plug in the output of my iPhone into my mixer/monitors, and immediately play the backing for a song I've never heard, and play/improvise over the top.

Highly recommend it!

Band-in-a-Box is the musician's secret weapon.

I have the iRealBook app on my iPod Touch and also got the extra style package. For the price, it is a deal and very handy. Most of the musicians and singers I work with also have the app. The org cost when the first generation of iBook came out was $7.99, now I think it went up to $9.99, which is still reasonable.

They are trying to find a way to offer another option on iRealBook to have the melodies available but there are of course copyright issues. You can't copyright chord progressions necessarily.

You know, just a few weeks ago I had that exact idea for an iPhone/iPad application! My idea was to have a an area where you could write your own chords to songs but also there would be an assortment of songs that have already been chorded which you could import in and play along to.

With the iRealBook app, are you able to record yourself over the playback?

Thanks for posting this or I might have spent a few more weeks spending time thinking and starting the design. Like with a lot of things, if you have thought of it, there's a very good chance someone already has.
