You might want to try Janacek, "In the Mist." I think of it more as "expressionism" then as post-impressionism. It has elements of impressionism, but then it loses it's delicacy and gets a bit rough.

Also, his two movement sonata, 1905, is interesting.

Charles Griffes is another possibility.

Haha, a little bit. I didn't really "learn" it well, but when I was practicing some passages, it wasn't giving me as many problems as Ravel's. I guess I'll find out better later when I decide to actually study it.

What a great piece, I really like the first Ballade from Op.10.

Interesting... The first is great, but I enjoy playing the 2nd and 4th the most. Not to leave the third out or anything, it's good too!
Ha ha...I was pulling your leg... but maybe you're pulling mine too? Of course, I knew you meant the Brahms PC #1, so I was just kidding when I said Brahms Ballade #1.

I was playing a student with a miniature chess set recently. He asked me if it was magnetic so I asked him if he was talking about my personality. About a minute later he got the joke...maybe.

pianoloverus, your joke went RIGHT over my head, oops. I figured you implied that Brahms PC 1 is a great piece, and you ALSO liked Ballade 1 from Op. 10.

Often times, jokes/sarcasm goes RIGHT over my head. ha

I do love Rachmaninoff and Ravel, but I'm looking for something else this time. And I agree, Pavane for a Dead Princess is AMAZING!!!!!! I've actually worked on it before.

This is all good stuff! Thank you people! There are some that I knew of and just had to be reminded, but there's plenty I haven't heard.

By the way, a big part of it is the tempo. I once read that Prokofiev didn't want it to be played very fast. I'm not going to knock Horowitz, because he can obviously do it really well. If you take it at his tempo, yes it seems VERY VERY hard, although if what I read is correct, it shouldn't be really bad.

What do you know on the issue of tempo?
