My thoughts are w/ your mom and dad.

The following links are to my piano teachers web site and youtube videos of him playing. As you look at his site you will understand why I'm sending it. I could go on and on, but he is amazing human being and musician.

Although easy for me to say, don't let your mother give up. She can still play if she wants to. It will be very different than what she knows but she can still play.

I hope you find this useful. karl

Thanks so much, guys. You're so encouraging, which in turn, I can be to my mom. I hope and do believe you're right about her returning to piano and playing by feel. I just can't imagine her giving it up forever. That would be too heartbreaking. Hopefully she just needs time.

Apple, your student sounds so inspiring! I hope she gets into Julliard and knocks their socks off smile I got your email ~ thank you very much!

Karl, I checked out all of the links. Wow ~ Keith is truly amazing! Thank you!

I've tried to call my mom and dad this afternoon, but they haven't been at the FL home. I'm hoping that means that they got out and had some fun smile

I'll keep a good thought for your mom, your sister, and yourself, Denise. My mom also largely lost her vision from macular degeneration toward the end of her life. She no longer played piano, but greatly enjoyed reading.

I remember reading that zinc and selenium are beneficial in slowing this condition (although selenium can also be toxic in excessive amounts), and I think we all know that vitamin A is good for our eyes. The role of high blood pressure, diabetes, etc is less well-known. It could be that sharing your story will remind readers of how high the price tag can be when it comes to neglecting diet, exercise, regular physical exams, and controlling these very common chronic illnesses. Anyway, these things can help if they have enough of a head-start on the disease process.

Inuit (formerly known as Eskimo) knew that the liver of... what, polar bear? walrus?... was poisonous and should never be eaten; it was discovered to be poisonously rich in vitamin A. So any good thing can be harmful in excess.

I hope your mom does not give up playing, once she has some time to adjust. It's just possible that the music is under her fingers and that she has never realized the extent of this. Anyway, she can still listen. A nice stereo system and collection of CDs could be a wonderful gift for her, if she doesn't have one... or a computer that 'hears' her voice commands and plays the selections she likes.

Anyway, best of luck.
