Great link, Dan! This is the first time I've actually seen what is supposed to happen. I have a sound engineer background, and that is indeed how much I figured they would theoretically move. I always doubted it, though

Much to my surprise the low bass strings on my concert grand actually move the string cover. A student was watching while I was playing and thought there was a live critter under the string cover.

If you read the comments, it is debated whether or not what is shown in the video is actually going on. I really doubt that the high partials are that much more pronounced than the fundamental. There are high speed videos online which support this. They are not--on piano strings. The strings shown in this video are those of a string bass, not those of a piano. The tensions are much, much lower and the excursions are much, much greater. ddf

You also have to take into account that no matter how it was photographed, the frame rate will affect how you see it.

You also have to take into account that no matter how it was photographed, the frame rate will affect how you see it. That's just what I was thinking. The frame rate is acting like a strobe and emphasizing particular partials. It would be interesting to see how the video would look under faster or slower speeds.
