Hi Kawai James,

This morning I heard about the bad earthquake in Japan... I'm so sorry about that! I hope you're doing well (you're near Tokio, if I remember correctly).

I hope that there is not too many casualties and too much destroyed... What about the KAWAI factories?

My sympathies and all the best!

Hello chaps,

We felt the quake in Hamamatsu earlier this afternoon. Undoubtedly the strongest, longest earthquake I have ever experienced - the head-office was evacuated, as was the Ryuyo piano factory which is beside the coast.

Tokyo does not appear to have sustained a great deal of damage, however Miyagi prefecture in the north west, in particular the large city of Sendai has been very badly affected. I am sure many of you will have seen the harrowing footage of tsunami waves sweeping across fields, washing away houses and vehicles.

I am scheduled to fly back to the UK tomorrow afternoon, however given today's dipterous events, this is looking highly unlikely.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

James

I missed this thread...was on my mind today about these terrible events. Very glad you are ok James...when you get home to the fine city of Norwich you can unwind and revel in the way life just comfortingly ticks along at its steady, predictable pace.

Best wishes to everyone in Japan.

Hi James and fellow Pianoworld

I just want to use this opportunity to not only send my thoughts and prayers to James and the many people of Japan who are dealing with the quake and subsequent tsunami, but also to offer my thanks to the incredible Japanese Search & Rescue teams who were one of the first nations to offer it's unreserved support by providing expert Search and Rescue expertise after the devastating earthquake that struck Christchurch in New Zealand on Feb 22 this year. Japan holds a very special place in the hearts of a lot of kiwis for their incredible generosity in providing their top S&R teams at very short notice to assist when

For those unaware, theirs are some of the most skilled Search & Rescue teams in the world and are very highly respected. Their experience and expertise is considered unsurpassed.

At a personal level, I have worked for a Japanese firm for the last 10 years and as yet, we have not heard from our offices in Sendai which is worrying us all greatly. I was so relieved to read your post earlier in this thread James. Take care, stay safe.

Regards

Rob

What I remember most vividly from California's 1989 World Series earthquake, was how disturbed the atmosphere was--- it almost struck me like a physical sensation, as if the air had turned into some jello-like substance. The news cameras didn't come to my neighborhood, for there was not much to see, except a church steeple or two on the ground. But we could feel the terror and pain of the people who were being crushed to death in their cars under the collapsed McArthur double-deck freeway, or killed by collapsing buildings, or seeing their homes and belongings burn. All this, with no power or phone service. I would have thought restaurants would be closed--- many of them had to--- but the bars were doing a brisk business behind their smashed windows, by candlelight.

My refrigerator and phone worked again four days later. The fire was brought under control, this time without dynamiting blocks of splendid mansions to create a firebreak, as they did in 1906. Most things were more or less back to normal within a month, except that the aftershocks continued for a very long time, each new occurrance undermining the nerves. Years later, I even got to see the TV coverage (back at the time, no power = no TV. But, 22 years later now, the Emperor Norton Bridge (some call it the Bay Bridge) has still not been completed. The several pulses of the Japanese tsunami that traveled all the way across the Pacific to California, washed across the bridge's footings, still under construction.

So yes, I was thinking of James; I was thinking of the people who built my Subaru, and my piano, my camera, my bed; a lot of things I like. I was marveling that this event was 900 times more powerful than our earthquake, and combined the worse features of that, plus a tsunami, plus a nuclear reactor out of control.

We get to meet Japanese people in California. There are many things to like about them. It is so easy to hope for the best for them, yet so hard to hold in the mind the numbers they are starting to crunch as they begin assessing the repair bill.

Well. A long note to say, I kind of understand, good luck to you, and I hope the aid is of assistance to you. Learning how your architecture has performed in this situation will help us all, who live in the Ring of Fire.

Don't lose hope was one of our main lessons. I know that tonight there are many people who are alive under some collapsed structure; some will be pulled out alive.

I am sure the Japanese are a very self-reliant and well-prepared people, but I am glad my government has offered whatever aid they want. Part of the aid is crews who are skilled at this sort of work. It's astonishing how long some people can hold on as they wait for rescue, and equally astonishing how discouraging the work can be.

Just... don't lose hope.

Good luck to you all!

What a awful disaster ...especially now the nuke plant has blown up.
I hope they can get things under control quickly but there are going to be a lot of affected people.

I pray that our good God will be with the people of Japan in this calamity, Kawai James and others who are working or living in Japan for other reasons. I pray there will be no more deaths and that the country may recover the soonest from this catastrophe.

I also pray for KJ and the good people of Japan. I was so saddened by the earthquake that hit the beautiful country of Japan. I was heartened by the outpouring of support from over 50 nations including the United States. We pray for all of Japan during this crisis and for the quick recovery of this wonderful country.

Hi James, Glad your OK. I'm in the Canaries at present, in a free wifi bar, we got the news on the BBC World Service. I think they're under estimating the loss of life and damage, but I hope I'm wrong.
