so after trying a humidifier (venta) for a winter, it appears that it's somewhat of a futile effort because once we turn on the heat, it completely overwhelms the humidifier. as summer is coming along, i'm gonna get one of those humidifier/dehumidifer bars installed inside the piano. it's also nice because i'll be out of town for a few months in the summer (actually, also this winter) so i only need a friend to come over every other week or something to make sure everything is fine.

there are apparently more humidity control systems out there than i thought--i was only aware of dampp-chaser. which system would you guys recommend? we have a steinway B. thanks!

(also, a price range would be appreciated if somebody has that info)

What kind of heating system do you have in the house?

What size humidifier did you get?

it's a... AC system? i.e. it circulates air, instead of a, i don't know, heating coil or furnace or something. it's an apartment building, it's "central heating" in the sense that the themostat is

humidifier: venta airwasher LW 44.

anyway, it suffices to say that no humidifier, unless enclosed, can possibly overcome this exchange of air. not to mention that if i'm not around there daily i can't keep replendishing the water supply.

additional info: i use a hydrometer to keep track of the humidity in the living room. so i know how much difference it makes when the heat is on versus off.

Forced hot air systems overcome that humidifier easily. You are correct.

If you can install humidification on the air system, that will work well. Today's units are clean and efficient. This is, of course, presuming you own your residence.

April Air is one manufacturer that I know of that has a quality product.

A Damp-Chaser two tank system would be a good alternative if you have no other options. I do recommend that manufacturer overall. I don't know the pricing in the NY area.

Yeah, probably easier to just install a Dampp-Chaser. A two-tank system, thanks, I'll look it up.

Lingyis,

You mention other piano humidity systems besides Dampp-chaser. Can you specify?

I agree with Larry. The two tank DC system and possibly the undercover will probably do the trick.

Good luck with the Rachmaninoff! [Linked Image]
