Greetings from Missouri everybody!

I had a pastor call me with the complaint that his pianist just plays the piano too loudly. He was wondering if there was anything I could do to quiet down the piano. It is an upright Yamaha by the way.

Any suggestions?

LOL. I'm a pastor, too. We're all afraid of our musicians. =) We'd rather alter the piano than offend the pianist. wink Too funny!

Voice the hammers, increase the let off distance, dial in some lost motion, fill the space between the backposts at the rear with sound absorbing material.... Leave a brochure on "carpel tunnel for pianists" on the piano......... haa haa

Put the quilters group or banner making group to work making a decorative padded fabric backing for the vertical piano. Kill two birds at once - a prettier piece to look at and a more gentle sound.

When I hear about church piano pounders, my alarms start going off. String material fatigue, followed by string breakage at the terminations is quite likely soon to follow.

Have the sound tech turn the piano up in the monitor mix high, and the player will back off

I think Wayne has the answer here. The problem with voicing it down or changing the regulation is that the pianist will play it harder and harder to compensate.

Maybe he is playing loudly because he prefers the piano to the choir ... wink

Well come to find out, the piano is actually a Baldwin-Hamilton. It does indeed have a very bright tone. I'm going tomorrow to shape the hammers. Also, I have located some 4' foam that I'm going to cut and place in the recesses on the back of the piano. That should bring down the volume a little bit.

Those Baldwins can be very loud and brassy. Deep needling the hammers can help to tame them (somewhat).
