I'm not sure if this is the right place where to post this. I have a suggestion for the "Adult Beginners Forum" I think we should change its name and purpose, because it's very confusing.
I think we need a "Student Forum" but not an age-based forum. Let's say a 11 year old beginner comes here looking for suggestions about easy pieces. Should he post in the "piano corner" were technical advanced discussions occur? Should he post in the "adult beginner" forum although he is not an "adult beginner"?
What about a 18 year old beginner who want to be a serious musician? It's adult by definition but still would have very different needs from a 60 year old playing for fun.
What about a 30 year old not beginner but not very advanced either, playing mainly pop and rock music? He doesn't belong in the "piano corner" for sure (where mostly classical and advanced repertoire is discussed) but doesn't belong either to a "beginner" section.
I think the "adult beginner forum" doesn't make any sense. We need a "student forum" where people of every age, still learning, not teaching and needing non-advanced suggestions in varied repertoire including pop and new age stuff can interact.
What do you think?

While I see your point, I personally think the ABF works great as it is with a fantastic community, so if it's not broken, don't fix it

.....if it's not broken, don't fix it But it is a little broke. I think it's broke in a way that wouldn't be that evident to someone like you who's been around a while. But I think it's very puzzling to new and recent members, or at least it was to me -- and still is. Despite my billions of posts, I'm still fairly new. And even though obviously I've looked at things plenty, I honestly cannot tell you exactly what ABF really is, or what things should or shouldn't be put in it, because the name works against such an understanding. I do a literal double-take each and every time I see that title on the main page. The main thing I really know is that it has evolved beyond its name. I'm not sure the new name suggested in the above post would solve it, because that doesn't seem to cover it either -- but if the suggestion gets us thinking about it, it's good, and if a better name can't be found, "Student Forum" would seem in any event to be an improvement.

BTW -- well said. The site might decide that changing the name and/or the specifications would be more trouble than it's worth, but I think you make the point well.

This has been discussed before. Let it be!!!! I would probably never have opened this forum in the first place if it was named anything other than "Adult Beginners", because that is what I was - am. That's what most of us are when we join, which is the whole point.
There is a "student" section on another forum, and the students are mostly young adults who are learning to play advanced material. A true beginner might be interested in what they have to say, but would not be comfortable posting there regularly.
I vote for leaving this as the "Adult Beginner Forum".

The only thing I think is potentially unclear is that ABF isn't just for beginners. It's for restarters, too (who may have widely varying levels of proficiency), but the title doesn't make that clear.
I think that the idea of a "Student Forum" has even greater potential for confusion unless it were explicitly intended for conservatory students. Otherwise, everyone is a student! (In the words of Robert Schumann, "There's no end of learning.")
Although it may seem that all bases aren't covered by the existing setup, there's a practical limit to the number of sub-forums that can be created for increasingly unusual circumstances. Everybody has a different story with different backgrounds, goals and musical interests, and all of us have a place (or places) somewhere here already. It's very common for members to participate in more than one area—or to gravitate to where they feel most comfortable—as they see fit.

I think a lot of people in the Adult Beginner forum are not Adult Beginners. The ABF is not only the forum for adult (whatever this means) starters and restarters, but it's also the forum to discuss non-classical music (like Lanz or Tiersen or soundtracks) which are not discussed in the other forums and it's also the forum to post lessons or the forum where a 13 year old beginner would go to ask questions and find a community where he/she belongs. I bet the majority of the contributors of the ABF are not beginners at all as they have at this point reached an advanced level as you can see from the recitals. Otherwise, everyone is a student! (In the words of Robert Schumann, "There's no end of learning.") In fact the ABF is for everyone and everyone reads it or posts there. In the ABF everything from beginner to virtuoso level is discussed, but with a learning approach. It's the non-age non-genre non-grade based forum where everyone learns and shows what he/she has learned. The other forums don't have these functions. The teacher forum is mostly about teaching or studio management ideas or for teachers to communicate to each other or for questions about teaching and teaching methods... The pianists corner is mostly for pianists who have degrees in music, work professionally as musicians, are completing their studies at conservatories and is mostly to discuss orthodox classical repertoire, performance ideas, music programs, piano halls, competitions... Yes, there's a bit of confusion since people are posting the same question about how to acquire speed or play sextuplets or use the pedal properly in both ABF and "pianists corner" forums, which goes to prove again that there's something confusing about the ABF name.

Well, I don't think you should remove the AGF, but adding a Student Forum sounds like a wonderful idea.

I have Finished 3 books on piano, I have gone over the three, three times and now starting my fourth book. I can read and play all of them, my problem is I cant sight read and play fast enough eighth notes and sixteenth. Any suggestions would be appreciated. because Im thinking I maybe waisting my time and considering to just chalk it up as a lost cause.
