I tune my Bos 225 2 times/yr, live near Boston and have the damp chaser humidity system and a humidifier built into our forced hot air heating system. (and am very diligent keeping water in the tanks)

What are the best times of year to do the 2 tunings to maximize the length of time the piano stays in tune?

Boston does not have very large fluctuation of relative humidity with it generally above the needed amount of 44% most, if not all the year long. It generally takes 2-3 weeks for sustained RH swings to effect a piano so if you go to the following chart, you are probably best off tuning in May and November. This allows about a month for the piano to adjust for anything the DC system can't handle. Since the RH levels will be drier/lower inside the home when your heating, these dates coincide probably pretty close to your heating/non heating cycle on the home with a month to adjust. The DC systems do work well enough to equalize things, so I doubt this timing will make much of a noticable difference.

With the Dampp-Chaser system installed it shouldn't make much difference when you have the piano tune. Pick a time when it best works into your schedule.

Years ago I used to try and predict what a good time of year to tune the piano was but whenever I did the weather that year would decide to prove me wrong! If you really want to know you should get a data-logger temperature humidity gauge and watch the actual humidity in your home. It would be best to avoid tuning after unusual spikes of humidity or dryness.

Also remember that tuning is only one aspect of piano care. Voicing, regulating and cleaning are also important.

@Wayne: Our climates may differ, but here Dampp-Chasers are the difference between a) pitch-raising every single time you tune the piano, or b) tuning normally. Pianos are still thrown out of tune at humidity +/- peaks, though, so the weather definitely has to be taken into consideration.
