Hey I am a beginner of one year and I have a video on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oYdAmYmpOs&NR=1What do you all think? Bass guitar is my main instrument which is why I don't have better, harder pieces for piano. Thanks for reading my post. Douglas.

Hi Douglas. I thought you did a fine job. Tempo was nice and even. Are you taking lessons or self taught? Thanks for sharing.
I saw one of your bass guitar vids. Looks like you been doing it a while. How long have you been playing bass?

Light and Blue - one of my favorite pieces It's fun to play, too. Nice steady pulse - but that's kind of a bass players strong point, and it shows. Good for you. My brother plays bass professionally, and when I restarted playing piano I thought of my left hand as the bass player's part. But I like the way both you and he think of the bass as its own solo instrument, besides just backing. It's nice to hear the versatility a bass can have. You do nice work. Cathy

This was very good for one year. You are hitting the notes cleanly and with good tempo, but I think you need to add some swing to bring out the feel of this piece. Maybe stronger emphasis on the first beat of each measure then swing the next three. I also might go a little softer and a little more staccato in the left. Just my opinion. Overall great job!
(Many, Many, Many years ago I used to be a bass player too.)

Douglas, very nice job! Good rhythm. One of the posts on the YouTube page suggested slowing it down for a little more "bluesy" feel. Try that too. Though what you did was certainly impressive.
I'm getting there--note by note.

Very, very nice! You played that smoothly and confidently and seemed to "feel" it. Considering the "red light-itis" I get when trying to record, this is even more impressive. Keep it up!

Sounds good. Keep up the practice and you'll flow on piano like you already do on bass.

Thanks everyone for all the kind comments.
To akira, I have been playing bass for four years and am all self taught. Personally, I'd rather play bass as opposed to piano, mainly because I'm better at it and I like rock music better.
More vids to come and if anyone has videos to post here, please do.

I'm told guitar players develop callouses on their fingers- does this bother you at all when playing piano? I can't quite imagine.....just curious!

I'd rather play bass as opposed to piano, mainly because I'm better at it and I like rock music better. I agree about liking rock better. I never played guitar or bass(unless you count the 2 months when I was 13). Not that I don't like playing classical or listening to classical, but if I am walking around campus there is no doubt I'm listening to some heavy metal. There is something about playing keyboard and classical music that is soothing though, a nice change from the double-bass pedal. I really noticed how much I enjoyed it after I began working on a "real" piano piece (Chopin Op28 no15). I can play some Metallica and Pantera riffs on keyboard, but playing classical piano (fine, I have a crappy keyboard) just does it for me. Keep with it if you enjoy it even a little bit, you may change your mind

Hey, that was really fun to listen to (I replayed it as soon as you stopped ). You even inspired me to try playing that one! I agree with bluekeys, a bit of swing might make it even better. Also, sometimes I can get an nice lazy loping feel out of blues by playing certain notes more on the front or back of the beat. Des that make any sense? I can hear when I do it right, but I'm not quite sure exactly what I'm doing to make it work... Is it that important notes can gain oomph by arriving almost too late? While others (off-beat?) notes can spark things up by being prematurely snappy? Anyone please de-confuse me if I'm being totally misled or incoherent -- I'm just trying to express a quality of blues that can get me off my seat and onto the dancefloor.
Please step aside. You're standing in your own way.
