Yes, it has been changed, and the line is there when I open the host file again...

You added .... 184.107.161.242 imslp.org to the host file?

... and you cannot access http://imslp.org/ ?

I'm using FireFox (though I suspect this makes no difference). Could the country origin of the user play a role?

That's what I did, and I cannot access it.

Maybe, that's what I was suspecting too... Any other Australians using Windows here? smile But I can access it from all other sites indicated in the two threads.

Adding another line like:

184.107.161.242 www.imslp.org

will make your www.imslp.org also work. Just having a imslp.org entry doesn't automatically make www.imslp.org work. Just to make things confusing, if you have a www.imslp.org entry but not a imslp.org entry, entering http://imslp.org will often work in many browsers because the browser will often times try prepending the www for you if the original fails.

I think the site is back online anyway, but your welcome.

Yes, I could do that, but I have already bookmarked the new link. smile
Hopefully all these problems are only temporary anyway! They are so nasty with their constant threats against IMSLP...

PS: I have indeed noticed many times how the www is automatically added when opening a link....

I reedited that host file and placed # in front of that line and I can still access the site.

Was this a problem to begin with ... or not?

At the least I learned some useful editing techniques. (I vaguely remember this from the old DOS days.)

It was a problem this morning, when MPA asked GoDaddy to take down the imslp.org domain name, and they did.

It ceased to be a problem when, later in the day, MPA asked GoDaddy to reinstate the domain, while they worked through their issues with IMSLP. (See a previous posts for the actual PR tweets from MPA.)

So it's not a problem now, thankfully.

It is a pure absurd to me that ANY kind of non-police type organisation can demand anything addressing private domain names registered in the U.S. by GoDaddy...

I wonder what they had to do to have the domain suspended.

Again and again the same thing with IMSLP! They are just too bothered that they can't take advantage of long dead composers and their works... frown

My IMSLP works like clockwork ... tested on a Chopin 9 page mazurka ... took 2 minutes to download.

Going directly to the portal at imslp.org is down for me still. but you can go through google and it works fine, and imslp.org/wiki still works fine for access to the database.

The message I pasted below is what caused the suspension.

Some things jumped out at me: 1.) this came from an organization merely asserting that there a copyright violation, not an official notice from a governmental enforcing agency, and 2.) they give one example of a score they think is in violation of the law, and use that to leverage the take-down of the whole site, and 3.) the claim that the score is in violation of US copyright law is in fact not in violation of US copyright law (so the question arises whether they are deliberately lying or not), and 4.) why do they expect a foreign website to act according to their local laws?

What is surprising is how promptly Godaddy shut down the site, even though their CEO is very apt at recognizing the elephant in the room and.. shooting it down

when it comes to godaddy there are lots of elephants in the room.

This resolves the domain name imslp.org locally on your computer, so your browser is directed straight to the server and you will not need to manually replace any URLs. It's a complete bypass of the domain name suspension.

Under Windows the hosts file is typically located in the the Windows/System32/drivers/etc directory. It requires administrator privileges for editing, so you have to open Programs --> Accessories then right-click Notepad and select "Run as administrator". I guess that similar procedures apply under MAC OS, Linux, etc. .

For OS X/Unix users:

This is located in /etc/hosts.

Editing this file requires root privileges, so the best way to do it is in the terminal.

Open a terminal window (on OS X, that's Terminal.app in your /Applications/Utilities folder) and type:

Code
sudo vi /etc/hosts

You may substitute vi for your text editor of choice.

You will be prompted for your password. Please note that it WILL NOT echo as your type!

WARNING: Do not modify the entries pertaining to localhost in any way! You will eff up your computer royally!

Hit "s" to enter insert mode in vi, use the arrow keys to move to a new line, and add the lines as above:

Code
184.107.161.242 imslp.org

To save your changes, press ESC, then type
Code
 :wq

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST!!

If you messed something up in this file when using vi, and need to back out without saving changes:

Hit ESC and type:
Code
:q!
