Nice!!

What a difference it makes when a composition is actually played by a human, instead of a piece of software!

And there were a couple better-than-average youtube comments:

-- that's what i call in spanish a "fugaga".

-- You should re-write it so BACH is in the final cadence. Then this would go from epically epic to unbearably epic.

Wow, nice. thank you Megumi. My teacher is always looking for a piece for high school students. High school is the time many students tend to fall under the pressure of having to appear to be "COOL". It lasts only a couple of years, so her strategy is to have them play piano composition that sounds cool ranging from Jazz to contemporary, not necessary classical music. After while, they come back to classical music.

BTW how hard do you think the Lady Gaga Fugue is? For example, compared to Inventions? I have never played a fugue, and although I've played several Bach inventions, it's been a few years since I've worked on any. I'm thinking of playing this and am wondering if it's harder than I think.

I think it's on par with the three part inventions in terms of voice complexities. I tried sight-reading it through one time and I thought it was mostly playable. It does have a few awkward spots where you'd have to work out the fingering. (It's likely that the composer doesn't have a lot of keyboard experience himself, so the notes don't fall under the fingers very well.) For what it's worth, it feels more playable than the other novelty fugue popular on Youtube, the "Nokia."

The Lady Gaga fugue was by far the best of the bunch, excellent voice leading great structure, thoroughly enjoyable fugue on a popular song.

Of the Britney Spears fugues (on Oops I did it again) the second in Lingyis' post was well written as far as it went (not far). The first one had awkward counterpoint.

So where can one get the sheet music to the Lady Gaga fugue?

yeah i agree. the lady gaga one was certainly the best. there might have been a couple octaves early on that really stood out, but once all three voices got going it was quite enjoyable.

So, I think I've only played two part inventions, and if this is more like a three-part, it may be much harder?? I will still give it a try,

It seems that the sheet music has disappeared from that link.

Does anybody know where to get it, or have it?

Thanks

I've seen the Lady Gaga Fugue discussed on PW but, quite frankly, didn't pay much attention until now.

As I understand it, the fugue is written by an Italian composer, Giovanni Dettori, and is based on the theme of a song, "Bad Romance," by Lady Gaga.

I watched a portion of Gaga's "Bad Romance" video, then I followed the score provided at the beginning of this thread.

While pleasant enough, there is nothing particularly exceptional about the fugue itself. It could have been written as an exercise by any competent composition student.

So I guess my question is.....what is the appeal of this fugue????? Is it the novelty of a Baroque style fugue being based on the theme of a Lady Gaga song? Is it because the fugue sounds "cool" - and can be used to help make classical music "relevant" to young people?

Its not like this type of thing hasn't been done before....for example:

Lady Gaga's name is attached to it. That is all.
