MathTeacher asked an interesting aside question on his relationship advice thread, which piqued my curiousity. FYI, here are the responses so far:

It is mine, but sometimes I feel I should sit a key or two to the right of it (damn piano is not symmetric about middle C).....

Hey, whaddaya doin', hijacking your own thread? ha

But since you asked.....

I don't sit anywhere near there. The exact position depends on the piece, as you said, but very little. My default position is at the F above middle C. Sometimes it's half a key to the left of there.

And that's about it. smile

OK, who else.....(I've never wondered about this before, or asked, and I have no idea what other people do)

Yes, but on a modern piano "middle C" is not in the middle, exactly, is it?

I don't recall anyone referring to it as "the point intersecting the exact middle of the piano ambitus at C."

Yes, this.

Let's also not forget that until around the turn of the 20th century, it was more common for the piano to only reach a high A, rather than a high C - and in earlier periods, the range was more limited still. Modern portable keyboards come in 61, 73, 76 and 88 key variants, so it makes sense to use a certain key as a reference point rather than an arbitrary midpoint.

All this talk of the geometrical midpoint is rather irrelevant. A pianist will position oneself wherever it feels most central to the notes one normally plays. I think for most of the classical piano repertoire, middle C is pretty central. Most students begin with middle C and learn notes to either side of that - hence the tendency to see middle C as the central note. It's hardly a critical important point though. Sit where you please.

Finally, why the heck are we talking about this anyway?

As for height issues, I have one friend who is 6'8" and his wife is 5'2". I have quite a few friends who are over 6' and they all seem to have short wives.

I just sat down at the piano then to check it out (as I couldn't have told you off the top of my head) - and as it turns out - I sit exactly between the E and F above middle C.

I'm at D. I don't really know why. Maybe there's a subconscious connection to the fact that the contrary motion arrangement of blacks and whites is symmetrical from D, and so it functions as a kind of axis.

I prefer to sit on the bench. It's easier to play that way.

Seriously, e-f above middle c

haha - my first reaction too.

I centre on C. Always have. No-one ever told me to, or not to. Of course I move up if I'm playing duets, but I don't tend to move my position much otherwise.

I sit in my custom-designed chair, following the example of Radu Lupu. (Actually, it's an old chair that I put cushions on to get it to the right height because I can't be bothered buying a bench, but who's counting? grin)

As for my sitting position in relation to the keyboard, it depends on what I'm playing. Usually I'm at E, but one of the pieces I play require me to use both hands at the top notes for several extended sections, so I shift my chair to the right before playing it.

This is probably quite strange, but I tried it out, and I sat with my right thumb at the G below middle C. Which is quite far off the centre, I'm not sure what to make of it haha.

For those of you who are sitting to the right of middle C, do you do that subconsciously because most of the pieces you play are centered there (wherever that is) or because it is more central in the piano than middle C?

I'm at D also, and also because of the symmetry (but purposely, not subconsciously)

My navel aligns with the E above middle C.

I also center on middle C and prefer to sit at the edge of the artists' bench.....funny though I think I am flexible on the specific height of the bench....except low....not too low...a chair is awkward...

Good idea, FI! I was thinking this might deserve its own thread.

Very interesting to see what people do. Looks like the "E-F" neighborhood is pretty common, and looks like my "usually F" is furthest right, so far, if only by a half-key margin. Evory is furthest left, by a lot....

One of my teachers taught me that, in determining where to sit, I should imagine a spike from middle D impaling me in the navel. With that vivid imagery in my mind, I haven't been able to shake the habit since. wink

Every once in a rare while, though, for some bass-heavy Rachmaninoff, etc., I'll find myself drifting more towards B or C.

If I recall, my first piano teacher told me to sit in front of middle C. As an organist it was the Eb above middle C.

It's 'E' for me -- because the fallboard decal is centered over that key.

A little off the subj, but.....stupidest thing I ever did on this: One time I was working hard on a passage where the right hand is way up there >>>> near the top, and I figured, heck, I'll SIT way up there, it'll be more convenient for working on the passage. ha

The trouble is that when you do that, you're not practicing how you'll actually be playing. It's probably literally worse than nothing. Fortunately I figured that out before too long. smile

as a church pianist.. i sit for the song... but usually a default middle C. Some songs (yes they are songs) are crazily skewed and sometimes I have to 'be' the bass section in a way so I sit so I can bang out some deep octaves easily. I rarely play in the higher registers.

at home - middle C, without variation.

at the organ - a bit higher, E or F.

Normaly I'm not thinking much about that. But sometimes it happened to me that I've been a little bit irritated when I recognized while playing that I'm not sitting right in the center.

I was referring to one of Delius' larger-scale works for baritone and orchestra, "Sea Drift," because sarah_elizabeth said she found herself "drifting" toward B or C ... smile

Cheers!

You should sit on the keyboard in the place that allows you to cover as many of the keys as possible. grin

Actually, originators of threads can edit the titles just as they can edit the content of their own posts.
