Do you wear one? You should! They are the norm in the service industry today. Everyone from the meter reader to the cable guy wears one when he/she shows up at your house.

Also, most schools, nursing homes, etc., require vendors to have a vendor badge. It really adds a finishing touch to your professional image, and they aren't expensive. I get mine online at http://www.easyidcard.com.

We're professional piano technicians, so we may as well keep pace with the rest of the professional service industry! smile

I think it is a good idea, Loren. I used to wear one all the time, but I lost it and haven't replaced it. Anything that helps the client remember your name better is a good thing!

I have an all-access pass for the series I tune for. Actually, about 20 seasons' worth, ever since they started handing out laminated ones.

A self-generated identification card makes all identification cards suspect. A CIA card could be from the Cutthroats International Association, and an FBI card could be from the Folsom Burglary Institute.

I don't wear one, and don't think I should.

Schools here print one. At one school, a machine even took my picture, and printed it on the badge, after it scanned my driver's license....wonder how safe my info is with them........

One thing I should do more of, is hand my business card to the customer first thing when they open the door. That is better than a badge, IMHO.

Like BDB sez, buying your own official-looking ID is suspect. The meter reader and the cable guy are issued IDs from the utility company and the cable TV company. If you work for a dealership then I could perhaps see it, but if you're an independent tuner, then it makes little sense, to me, at least.

If you're an official vendor with a school system or some other institution, then they probably have an ID that they issue, after you and they go through all the rigmarole to get you officially set up.

To each his own. smile

edit: I wonder, though. Just because the card is outsourced doesn't render it suspect. For all you know, the utility companies could outsource theirs. If for instance I had 5 techs working under me, and I got these cards and gave them to them, how would that be different? The point is, you are showing an ID so you can show what company you represent, and that company is you. Anyway, everyone does things differently. smile

I'm an official vendor in the state system of higher education, etc. NThey didn't give me an ID. These are not background/security cards. Think of them as "Hi, my name is, and I'm with."

How about a full uniform with a hat, a holster with a tuning hammer, and sown own certifications like RPT?

If I tune for a school, some of them give me a sticker. Other than that a business card serves the purpose.

I wear one while I'm tuning at the college as per their request so people do know who I am and that I am the technician. Professional looking and it clips onto my shirt.
