Hello all,I am learning the song "Somewhere Out There" arranged by Fred Kern who wrote a self help book. For the left hand he has an F half note.Directly to the right of that half note is a dotted half note G that has a dotted half note C directly underneath it.The next note is a quarter note E.Then a quarter note rest. The piece is in 4/4 time.Could someone please count this out for me as I am very confused with this measure. Thank you.

From the information you've given, it seems to me that there are two "voices" or lines going on at the same time : - voice one : the first half note starts on the first beat, and is followed by a quarter note then a quarter-note rest = four beats - voice two : the dotted half-note, G and the dotted-half note C start, together, on the second beat and get three beats, although there should be a quarter-note rest on the first beat of this "voice" to give a total of four beats.
This is all I can "guess" from your description and without seeing the score.
Regards,

Think of it this way - there are 4 beats in each measure. In this case, you have three things going on:
1 - Dotted Half G that lasts 3 beats, then a beat of rest 2 - Dotted Half C that lasts 3 beats, then a beat of rest 3 - Half F for 2 beats, then an E for 1 beat, then a beat of rest
Put differently:
Beat 1 - CFG Beat 2 - still holding CFG Beat 3 - holding CG but the middle note changes to E Beat 4 - rest
