I'm looking for a piano for my 13 year old son who is learning to play piano (he's taking RCM grade 8 this summer). I came across a Kawai US6X, 11 years old, asking for CAD$4600. Another Kawai US50, 30 years old, asking for $3000 obo. A Yamaha U3, 25 years old, gray market, asking for $3200. My son thinks the Yamaha sounds very bright. We will go look at the Kawai this weekend. Is Kawai US6X a good piano in general? Apparently this particular one costs $1400 more. Any advice?

The US6X is a fine piano, much newer than the US50 though they look the same as for it's case design. The US6X has the neotex keytops and agraffes in the bass and would be an upgrade over the older US50. Whether it is worth $1600 more is a good question contingent on it's condition.

A 25 year old gray market U3A can be a nice piano again contingent on it's condition. Some people prefer Yamaha over Kawai or vice versa in that they sound different and their action feel are completely different. wink

Go for the newer one. If it's newer, generally it is a better piano than it's predecessors. Out of these pianos, I've only played the Yamaha U3, so to an extent I'm not really qualified to give information about things I don't know...

However, as I play on U3's regularly at school, i can tell you they get very bright quite quickly (one was unbearable for me to listen to). But there are ones that are not so quite heavily played, and are more bearable to listen to.

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely look into the newer Kawai.

The US6X was in its time one of Kawai's top of the line models. If it's reasonably close to new condition (which may well be the case after 11 years of recreational use) it should sound much darker and less percussive than the old U3. I wouldn't say that's better. It's really a question of taste, the point being that your son finds the old U3 'bright'.

I'd definitely look it over and have your son focus on the mid-range and the treble tone since that piano will almost certainly shine in the bass. If he finds the action easy to manipulate and compliant to his touch and likes the tone in all key ranges, then get it inspected. Verify the age too with the Kawai serial number chart. Eleven years old would make it 2000 manufacture. I thought the production run on these pianos was over in the mid-nineties, but I wouldn't bet money on it.

The asking price would not be outlandish in the US, so I guess it's fair market or better in Canada. Whatever you can find out about its history of use is to your advantage, as is price negotiation.

The most important thing is to have your son spend some time with it before committing.

HI Turandot
Thanks for the advice, we will definitely look at the things you suggested when we go tomorrow. I did ask for the serial number and check the age of the piano on Kawai website, it turned out to be 20 years old not 11 years as the seller claimed. The seller is not the original owner, she bought it from another person who shipped the piano from Asia some time ago. Anyway, if the piano looks fine and my son likes it then we will hire a technician to inspect the piano for us. THANKS!

ppyoung,

When the reported age is off by two or three years, it's often just a question of the manufacturer's born date being earlier than the original date of sale. When it's off by nine years, someone is supplying misinformation. It's possible that the seller in this case was hoodwinked and didn't know the true age. This often happens with grey-market sales. It's possible that the seller knew the true age, but didn't want to reveal it. In either case you now have a strong basis for serious price negotiation if your son likes the piano and it checks out technically.

Take your time on this. Mae sure that the piano is satisfactory in every way.

The KAWAI US6X should be a good buy if it's only 11 years (made in 2000 or later 1999).

A local dealer in toronto is asking for same price $4600 for a 22 year old KAWAI US 63H, which I believe is on par with the US6x in term of size and sound quality.
