Hi, I just bought a used 42 inch Samick vertical piano. I am wondering how long to wait before having it tuned (it's only been in my house for 2 days now)

Also, some of the keys feel really sluggish and do not repeat quickly. Should I get the keys adjusted right away then wait awhile for the tuning or do both together or tune first/adjust later?

Can I do harm in playing the piano with sluggish keys (besides some frustration to me!).

Thanks.

You can have your piano tuned whenever you want. It may be more stable if you wait a week or two, but if there is no great difference in humidity and similar conditions between where it was and where it is now, that may not matter. It may take a while before you can schedule someone anyway, so you might as well call now. Mention the sluggish keys, so the tech can allot time to repairing them.

I say wait a minimum of two weeks. Don't worry about the sluggish keys; very common on new pianos and a simple fix your tech can take care of when he/she does the tuning.

I agree with Loren. Minimum of 2 weeks. I usually recommend 4 weeks just to be safe. I would still inform the tech in advance however of any problems you have with the piano so that they can adjust their schedule accordingly otherwise, if you simply say "my piano needs tuning" many of us will simply "schedule a tuning appointment only" because we have no clue at that time that you are also have other issues which then presses us for enough time to address everything before our next appt.

Most Samicks I've seen had yellow (brass?) plated key pins and needed eased on a fairly regular basis. I saw more sluggish key problems in Samick than usual.

sometimes... just playing the piano vigorously will do a lot to get it in shape. heavy octaves for instance.

Hi and thanks for all the replies. I'm so glad that the key issues seem common and not nothing too serious! What a relief! I now need to find/call a technician in the Calgary area and book an appointment.

The keys do feel a bit better after playing awhile I've noticed too. I am playing it as much as I can and the kids like doing scales all up and down the keyboard so I will encourage them to keep doing so!

Any recommendations for super tech's in Calgary Alberta? I want to take good care of the piano and want somebody amazing! Thanks!
