Yuja Wang has canceled her appearance with the Pacific Symphony this weekend due to illness. I was looking forward to this.

I must be bad luck, I had tickets to Martha Argerich and she canceled due to illness, and now this.

What illness?!

Last year I went to a LSO concert featuring Janie Janson. But she was replaced by another guy (sorry forgot the name) because of performance related injury. Fortunately the guy was pretty good otherwise I would be very disappointed frown

She is recovered now. Just seen her playing Brahms Violin Concerto in D a few months ago smile

I hope she gets better. I know she's had an arm injury in the past.

I wonder what percent of concert pianists have had some kind of arm/hand injury, by strenuous playing, serious enough to go to a doctor at some point? My guess is over 50%. I wonder if the real number isn't 70% or 80%.

I hadn't thought of an injury. Some of her youtube stuff seems sort of violent, in terms of movement anyway. She has those crazy alien fingers, perhaps those could be an issue injury-wise.

When Argerich canceled she was replaced by Jeremy Denk who did a great job. Perhaps Conrad Tao who is filling in for Wang will do so, also.

She does, indeed. I'll see what I can learn about her illness.

Conrad Tao is a great pianist and a wonderful up and coming talent.
Her fingers look, well, boneless and HUGE! Goodness, she must be able to reach an 11th or 12th...

I've seen Conrad Tao perform Shostakovich Concerto 1, and he did a wonderful job. I'm sure you will not be disappointed with his performance.

I don't know of many female pianists who play Stravinsky's finger-cracking Petrushka (not to mention Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No.3, Liszt Sonata etc) regularly, let alone females barely out of their teens. I hope she doesn't get the finger problems that Perahia did when he started playing virtuosic repertoire (Rachmaniniff, Schubert/Liszt) which follwed his meetings with Horowitz.

I think Perahia got an infected finger or cut his finger. I'd guess as a student and competition player he had already played a lot of virtuosic works before meeting Horowitz, although he didn't play much of that music in the beginning of his performing career.

Virtually all the female contestants in major competitions play "finger crackling" works, both solo and concerti.

You say my name? smile

I would need to see Yuja live or hear a recording other than the virtuoso transcriptions or things like that that are all over YouTube. I've heard good things about her, though.

Not sure what femaleness got to do with it.. Your female repertoire may be limited wink
