I looked through many places on the internet and I have yet to see a complete collection of all the scales. I really feel I need to learn them to make key signature a bit more understandable. I know some people say that they learn their scales before they learn key signature and I suppose this helps a lot. Please do help me. I can accept files if you have them, including Finale, Sibelius, and Adobe.

Currently Working On:
Chopin Waltz in B Minor (Finished)
Rondo Alla Turca - Mozart (Finished)
Coming up:
Phantom of the Opera?
Certainly more Chopin(Valses and Mazurkas, maybe even a Prelude)
And yet another Bach piece

Just to get a handle on your understanding of accidentals, if I told you to play:

G A B C D E F# G (G Major)
F G A Bb C D E F (F Major)

Can you match that up with the notes on the piano?
Can your write what the key signature would look like?

You may find this useful to relate the scale to the key signature:

You can find all the scales in the end of the "Hanon":

Here's another set of the 12 major and 12 minor keys.

Scales

Edit : I see that it's the same one that Carey posted. Great minds think alike!

Your sig says that you have Hanon. All the scales are printed out in detail in Hanon.

Regards,

Many decades ago I bought a scale and arpeggio book, McFarren I believe. It had all the fingerings for all the scales, in unison, thirds, sixths, double thirds, double sixths and any other possibility you can think of.

As I've gotten older and wiser, I've never had to consult that book for any information. All the scales you ever need are in the piano you practice on. If you need to look at a book for the fingerings of an Ab major scale, you haven't spent enough time trying to figure this out on your own.

Regarding scales in unison, those books will only give you the fingerings for starting on scale degrees one, three or six. Would you then have to buy yet another book to learn the fingerings for playing any major scale starting on any other starting tone? Do you see where I'm going with this? Some things have more worth when you figure them out for yourself. This really isn't rocket science and a good teacher can guide you in this process. If you have to learn an Ab major scale from a book you're not studying with the right teacher.

Get a college theory text book and read the first four of five chapters so you understand that information forwards and backwards.

Your advice is appreciated as usual. Dave, I see what you mean yes. There is one problem though. I really need to learn key signature this summer, and this summer, I do not have a teacher to guide me because I am going to be out of town a lot during this summer. You have no idea how much I do want to continue this summer too.

Bruce, are the scales in the Hanon excercises though. I only saw this in the key of C. I could transpose though. I don't exactly know all my key signatures though. I mean, you have the Concert Scales or the Major scales, and you have the minor scales. I guess you could say I am not at all familiar with my minor scales at all. I honestly don't know any of them but I can play a Major scale by ear.

The Brown Scale Book- utilized by many concert pianists. It's simple and you will develop better technique

Perhaps you don't have the complete Hanon, The Virtuoso Pianist. Exercise 39 - which covers twelve pages - has all 12 major scales, (that means in all keys) each followed by the relative minor (harmonic and melodic), giving a total of 36 scales in all keys, four octaves ascending and descending with fingering.

If you already have Hanon, you don't need anything more in order to learn scales and their key signatures.

Arpeggios (since you mention arpeggios in another thread) are covered in exercise 41 : "Arpeggios on the Triads, in the 24 Keys."

Oh. Yes, thanks, Bruce. I do have the entire collection, but it is on my computer which kinda blew up, and I am kinda using my mom's at the moment. So I will have to wait hopefully five more days till I get my computer back to retrieve them. I never honestly got the chance to look through the whole book though. I skimmed, paying little attention. I think I did come across something about scales at the time, but I dismissed them at the time without thinking. Thank you once more. I have sight read for about an hour today in my practice book my teacher gave me. I realized I am also horrible at timing and I freak out when I hit an eighth note. I am sure I can fix this with practice though.

Don't freak out about eighth notes. Get every note, even if it takes a snail's pace to get it- then speed it up slowly.

If anyone knows of any good music books by any composer that may be of help or be of interest to play, please tell me through here or on a PM. I would appreciate it if you could. I am mostly looking for a complete Beethoven collection and Mozart collection for future use when I get to that level. I complete Chopin Collection as well. Tchaikovsky as well. Basically anything that has helped you or any books, I could always use recommendations. I will take any composers really. I try to look for complete collections.
