I had a successful outing with the Stravinsky Concerto for Piano and Winds, successful enough that the conductor wants me to play with him again. For the next go-around, I pitched either the Britten Concerto or Falla's Noches. He doesn't know either one, so I'm sending him CDs. I know the top recording of the Britten is the one with the composer as conductor and Richter at the piano, but what about the Falla? Rubinstein? De Larrocha? Barenboim? Kapell?

You got that right about the Richter/Britten! They set the bar impossibly high, though I have heard other recordings, Joanna MacGregor for example (her CD includes both the original and revised 3rd mov't), which are worth a listen.

The Falla is wonderful piece. I would be inclined to favour Rubinstein. Argerich recorded it with Barenboim on a long deleted Erato CD, and her playing is expectedly magical, but the sound on that CD has never been particularly alluring to me.

The recording I grew up with was Gonzalo Soriano, which was good, but I much preferred the other piece, which was the Harpsichord Concerto, a piece you either love or hate.
