Tomorrow will be my third recital since starting as a re-beginner. Actually, I am more like a re-intermediate, since we're talking about terminology on another thread.

First recital went fairly well.
Second recital-- not as well. I wasn't prepared enough but learned something valuable (I am better off being over-prepared).
For this one, I am very prepared. Still, the adrenaline can throw me off. I don't know why I even get the adrenaline rush. I don't "feel" self conscious, it is a friendly crowd of other adult students. I am sort of in the middle of the pack in terms of ability, definitely not the weakest or strongest player so no pressure in terms of standing out.

I enjoy playing on good pianos (my little home spinet isn't as exciting).

So any advice? We had a practice recital recently, a small group and my fingers were shaking from the adrenaline. It surprised me and I played a little less aggressively because of it.

The winner of the recent Van Cliburn Competition for Outstanding Amateur said that eating bananas calms his nerves before going on stage. Good luck!

Is that andrenaline causing the fingers to shake? I never knew that! I always shake when playing for people, but have gotten better at it. I don't really play recitals but have played at Costco, various piano stores, and at family gatherings. I still shake even though it's gotten a little easier.

Good luck, T'sMom...that sounds like fun especially since you're playing with other adult students. I think I'd be more nervous playing with kids. Is this something that your teacher arranges?

Good luck, T's mom! I'm sure it will go well, as you have put in the preparation.

My advice: Try to do two "dress rehearsals" sometime today. Enlist a family member or neighbor and ask them to be your audience while you perform the piece. I'm always amazed at how much more nervous I am when my hubby sits on the couch for the express purpose of listening to me play than when I am simply playing and he's ten feet away on the computer.

This is true for me too!

I can do dress rehearsals ok at home. But one big difference is that I benefit a LOT from a warm up. Haven't figured out a way to handle that for recitals. Starting cold is harder. Even though we warm up before the recital starts, it wears off too fast.

I tried that before the last recital. My hands were shaking more than the first recital. I doubt the two things are related but I'm not sure I'll bother again!

When you sit at the piano, don't rush to start. Take a breath. Run the first few bars through your head at the tempo you'll play. Remember what key you're in, and if you have a memory lapse, just fake it for a bit til you find a place to jump back into the piece. And if all else fails, just end on the tonic! Works for me.
