Piano Value? chart on PW Well, this a guide for starters. Have you also looked at uprights in your price range and see which you prefer for sound and touch? I am currently holding on to a (grammatical correction made) four foot seven baby grand from 1992 made by Samick for Hyundai and it has its pluses and minuses.

I have great respect for Samick products. I am not a fan of this model because of its size. It seems a most unlikelly teacher's instrument. This model in decent condition in my market would sell for $1800-$3200 private party. Ten years of teacher use (many more hours than a normal family) would exhibit considerable wear on a piano of this type. You might keep looking.

I think Marty has some good advice. The piano I'm temporarily storing was my grandmother's, it was lightly played, and it was a huge upgrade from possibly the worst made piano, a Grand console from the mid 1960s. Alot depends on your expectations and planned use. Two different tuners have given varying opinions about its condition and potential, one saying it is ok for light use but don't expect it to hold a tune - but at that time the piano was in a different home without any humidity control. The most recent tuner said it is in decent shape though it has a lot of false beats in the treble and the glue on they lyre joint for the una corde has dried out so it doesn't function. Compared to other brands, the sound is a bit metallic. The damper pedal squeaks even though it was adjusted and corrected two months ago. The action is a bit stiff and it could probably use regulating.

That's some good advice. I would definitely play the piano you are considering and see if there are any problems. "Do it yourselfers" might be able to fix small problems, but if it is needing any repairs, you should definitely figure that into your price. I would also research ebay and classified sites to see if I could find any others that have sold to get a good idea of current prices. ebay has an advanced search for completed listings and you can probably get a good idea from there, just click on their Advanced Search button and be sure to tick the Completed Listings checkbox. Good luck in your decision!

The advice offered by Marty Flynn is good. If the piano has been a teacher's for 10 years, then the wear and tear will be extensive. I know the amount of maintenance I have to do on my teaching grand is considerable, to say the least. How well has this piano been maintained? My experience with Samick is that they are OK, but only that, and not that musical. Look longer and harder. You can do much better than this.

I currently own a Samick SG150, oak, 17 years old, bought it new. I am and have been an avid player, five to seven days a week, such as a teacher would, and many many hours a day. Over all, this has been a good piano, however, at about ten years old, the bass strings had got bad, i recently got so disgusted with it, i finally ordered new ones through Schaff, and repinned the bass section along with it, some voicing, and it sounds amazing now, nice ring, and more bright than dull tone. I too would look for something ore maybe, a baldwin is a nice piano. Over all, other than the strings, i have had good luck with this piano, but that does not speak for all of them.
