I have an Idea ( ooh gawd what now?) To lighten things up a little for those that have worked hard on Satie and are working harder on mendelssohn, but mainly to try and include those that have felt a little too daunted to take part in the mendelssohn.

Here is the Idea: For a "quicky" for the festive period maybe?

May I suggest a new themed recital that should be able to include just about everyone of any level... here is the idea:

A piece of music from any BLACK AND WHITE MOVIE... converted by yourself to be suitable for piano, there are many scores out there and help is available here for chords if they are required.

Think Hitchcock ( I can see wayne doing a version of the psycho shower scene music, I dont know why wayne It just came into my head! lol)

Think Orsen wells films, think musicals, think 633 squadron, dambusters theme etc etc... And all the musicals!!!

There should be something for everyone to choose a piece from suitable to their ability...

What say you folks what say you?

Rossy, I'm just dropping by to post some music and head to work. I'll need a little more time to consider your suggestion about another themed recital. Right now I'm still decompressing a bit from the last recital, and this is going to be another SUPER BUSY week at work before things quiet down for awhile. Not exactly the best time for me to consider taking on more!

In the meantime...how about a little flamenco music? I recently came across this rare video footage of guitarist Carlos Montoya performing, "Farruca."

Regarding Black & White Movie Themed Recital, I would love to be able to play the theme music from Stage Coach, but I haven't been able to find any sheet music, and I completely suck at transcription, though I guess I could rent the movie and give it a try.

The other thing I'd love to have words for (and sheet music if possible) is the Spanish song in Stage Coach, sung by the Mexican woman when they're at the inn where everyone runs away. I can never catch the words when I listen to the movie.

Anyone able to help?

I'd love to do "Laura" from the 1944 film noir classic of the same name. I don't need sheet music, but I couldn't have it ready for at least 8 weeks as I am preparing for a live Christmas recital later this month.

Last night I was listening to an Oldies channel and started feeling nostalgic for some of the music I listened to in the 1950s. Here is one of those songs sung by Frankie Lyman and the Teenagers, "Little Bitty Pretty One". Frankie Lyman was 13 years old when this song became a hit.

Jackie Wilson was also a favorite Rock & Roll star from that same period. Here is "Lonely Tear Drops".

I don't recall posting anything by Richie Valens in the past. However, here is one he sang in the 1950s that was a big hit. Here is his version of "La Bamba"

Hi Richard! You are right! The Ricky Nelson song was also popular at that time. We didn't realize at that time the music was in transition to other things. Good observation!

So, the Grammy nominations were announced, and there were things I am okay with.

First, I was happy to see that not only Jack White got a nomination for both best album of the year and best rock album with Blunderbuss, he go a nomination for best rock song for Freedom at 21.

I thought it was interesting that most of the instruments on the album were all played by women. The drummer is most impressive.

And here's Freedom at 21:

Fiona Apple's album The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do got nominated for best alternative album, along with Tom Waits' Bad as Me.

Tough call!!

The Midnight in Paris soundtrack got a nomination.. Here's Josephine Baker.

And the Goat Rodeo Sessions' album got a nomination for best engineered (non classical). That was a great album.

Here's to 50 more years of piano playing and a gazillion more Sunday postings!

On the 13th of July, 1985 Live Aid organised an event of epic proportions featuring concerts from two different venues with a satellite link-up. Here, today, in your presence, we try and match it by bringing you the Sunday Classical postings both from Ireland and Minneapolis.

OK, I'm getting a little carried away.

We start off our Sunday with one of the very first pieces of classical music I ever listened to as a boy, the Light Cavalry Overture by Franz von Suppé. The first version you listen to of a piece of music is usually the preferred version and I heard this by the Vienna State Opera Orchestra under Leo Gruber.

When I left home I wanted to keep this piece in my collection and went through many different interpretations, none of which caught the essence of the piece as I knew it, and got the tempo 'wrong' in many sections.

And then, when I was looking for the best William Tell Overture, I got a CD of Karajan conducting Famous Overtures and there it was, a true gem, the very best Light Cavalry, just like Gruber's, only better!

For those tuning in early in the morning this might be a little too stirring so you can delay hitting the play button until later. There's more soothing music to follow.
