Hello,

I plan to buy a youngchang grand piano-G175. It is made in 1988. The piano looks like new, barely played before. But by searching around online, I found Youngchang piano made before 1995 seemed having some serious problems. I know nothing about piano. So could anybody please explain to me what the problems might be and how expensive to have them fixed?

My daughter does need a good piano because of her level and passion, but I can't afford a very expensive one. Thank you very much for any replies.

In a situation like this it is best for you to contact a local technician of your choice to inspect the instrument for present mechanical condition and then local market value.

You are going to have to locate a technician and work with him/her over the years with regard to tuning and other upkeep so this is the time to begin finding one.

Discussing things that may go wrong with an instrument we cannot see is counter-productive and may cause you anxiety about repairs that could be non-existent.

Yes, the expanding action brackets problem. If they tell you that the brackets have been replaced with new, see if there is any way to verify this. One way would be to ask to speak to the technician that has been taking care of the piano.

Assuming he/she knows his/her stuff, he/she can clue you in to other potential problems as well.

Joe is probably correct in his diagnosis. The expanding brackets will expose themselves by completely de-regulating the piano. It's not a huge deal to replace them and regulate the piano, particularly if it hasn't been consistently regulated to compensate for the problem. YC will pay a small amount to a tech for this work and provide the brackets at no charge. You will want to find a tech familiar with this problem.

Technicians have countless stories of pianos that should have been evaluated before purchasing and were not. Even "free" ones, because the time and effort and possibly money spent is not worth the heartbreak of the disappointment. Get any piano you buy looked at.
