Hi folks,

I just received this keyboard this week and am delighted with it apart from one glaring problem that became apparent concerning a specific note, which - if it's not a fault - would see me return it.

It's the G# in the octave C6, which, as I played the crescendo/modulation part of Liszt's Liebstraum no3, I noticed just didn't ring out. There was a lot of 'thunk' and reverb, but hardly any actual note.

It's noticeable because the F and A#'s around it sound fine.

Some at the Keyboard Forum reckon this could be a velocity issue (I'm not very technical)...I'm hoping so rather than an issue with the sampling, because I can't believe Roland wouldn't notice this during testing.

FYI it also occurs in other patches as well (the EPs, mallets etc).

If someone could check this on their machine I'd be very grateful.

Cheers,
Simon

If one single key is acting different than the others, and this tracks through multiple patches, it's almost certainly a keyboard assembly problem. Roland probably has some kind of test for this, but maybe it isn't comprehensive enough to catch all the failure modes. If you play the problem key harder and softer, does it sound correspondingly louder and less loud?

Yes, sounds like you have a faulty board. My FP-7F doesn't exhibit this problem. The Roland warranty should take care of it completely.

I know it sucks when this happens, but hang in there - it really is a great DP.

I cannot hear that either on my own FP-7F. The only thing that is weird about it being that EXACT note is that the free undamped strings start exactly on the G6, but I don't think that could produce what you are hearing, specially on other sounds. That, to me, is a good pointer that it is a key sensors or mechanism issue.

Good luck with getting it fixed,
Rafa.

No such problem on my FP7F.

I'm not sure where you are located, but in the UK if something arrives faulty or develops a fault in the first few weeks you would get a refund or replacement (not a warranty repair).

I would push for a replacement rather than repair.

Thanks everyone for your replies, it's reassuring. Dewster, the key does sound louder/softer depending on how hard I play, but not necessarily with any more 'note'..there's just more corresponding hammer/reverb. It's very odd but pretty conspicuous, so I'm believing it's a fault.

It might also be worth doing a factory reset before you send it back. I doubt this will cure the problem but it is worth a try.
