Was GE1A a special edition of GE1? How can I tell if a piano is a GE1 or a GE1A?

The GE1A was a newer version and newer age wise than the original GE1. We are talking late 80s through the 90s before the GE series was discontinued altogether. I don't really know what exact scale change transpired but the GE1A was considerably better than the original GE1. Maybe a Kawai expert can disclose the exact physical differences or upgrade. I can give you exact dates when Kawai changed over to the GE1A when in my office tomorrow. The GE1A will have the A cast in the plate.

Thanks! The piano was made between 1996 and 1997. I saw "GE-1" on the plate, so it must be GE1 instead of GE1A.

The GE-1A was a revised and updated version of the GE-1. The string scale and basic dimensions were the same, but a duplex scale was added. As I recall that is the main difference with the 'A' model, although later some features from the RX grands were added as well (Slo-Fall fallboard, NEOTEX key tops, etc.)

This piano later became the GE-20, which is still being made by Kawai but is no longer sold in North America. The GE-30, which is a little longer, is still available.
