Hi guys,

I just went and bought myself a used yamaha U3H piano (played a lot of similar ones - and liked this the best) - I'm quite excited to be upgrading from my digital piano (which I will keep to trigger my modular synthesizer, but thats a different story).

Anyhow it's being delivered on Tuesday - i'm going to postition it up against an inside wall in the living room of my house. However the wall has a small opening in it - visible from the entry vestibule of the house - my concern is that the back of the piano which doesn't have the nice ebony finish like the rest of the piano may look somewhat unsightly - are there any particular covers designed to cover this? or does one just get some fabric and sling it across the back?

Thanks so much for your help!
Vinay

Congratulations on getting your nice piano. If it really needs covering, how about some black cloth wrapped and stapled around a long flat piece of thin wood then some Velcro to hold it all in place? You might look for trim pieces in the DIY stores, should be able to find the right size. You could customize it to just the size of the opening you need to cover or do the whole back. i have not seen any advertised but have never looked for one premade either.

Thanks - i'll see how it looks when it gets here - but will probably do something like that from the fabric store - most of the piano back will be hidden in any case by the wall. Good idea with the velcro - I was wondering how to do it without pinning anything into the piano!

Some of us might think that the back of a piano isn't a hard thing to look at, especially if it's only part if it. However, not everyone in a household might agree.

What is the small opening? Is it w window? Instead of attaching something to the piano, how about covering up the opening from the other side? Just a thought.

Better yet, post a pict of the opening, and the piano! Then we can help better, and also satisfy our urge to see photos of other people's pianos! grin

@ShiroKuro - piano arrives tomorrow - will definitely upload some photos. The hole is a feature in the wall - I guess it allows more light into the room? Not sure really was there when we bought the house!

Rather than covering the back with anything hard that might interfere with the sound, try getting some black speaker mesh like you see covering speaker towers. It is mostly opaque, and is ideal for your application. It the piano is likely to move any time soon, leave access to the back handles.
