CLP 370 and 470

As I am still on the lookout for a second instrument I went to the store this afternoon to tested some models. Initially I was looking for something not so pricy like in my previous post (Kawai CL36). Unfortunately the last one was sold on the weekend and they only had the older model CL35. Well, of course I had to play the complete line up of DP´s in the store and noticed the CLP 370 on sale since the new model CLP 470 was supposed to replace this one. Spending a little bit more money of course was not my idee but but I liked the CLP 370 (honestly it´s a bargain at the moment). Now of course I have read online trying to find some camparison between the two. The new sound engine does not seem to be a big leap forward for the 470. The only thing I noticed were the keys. Both have the NW action BUT the CLP 470 seemed to be little heavier (Don´t know if this is really the case or if I just felt it to be heavier ) Maybe this is because of the new "Linear weighting" of the new 470? The NW action should be despite of that exactly the same?? So, I would be interested if somebody had the same experience or at least (despite of the yamaha marketing "blabla") any opinion on the CLP 370 and 470. Saving 700,- Euro and going with the 370 would be my preffered solution. Any doubts??

The CLP-470 has a superior cabinet design over the CLP-370, in my opinion.
Cheers, James x ähhhhhh...ok For me the funktion is what interests me most. Of course the design is a bit better with the fallboard being able to cover the display and the bit higher note rest.

The new sound engine does not seem to be a big leap forward for the 470. Not sure about the 470, but I recently tested the CLP-440 over on the DPBSD thread. I can't comment on the smooth key let-off, but otherwise it's mostly just a P-155 in terms of sound technology. I half expected the AvantGrand sample set to show up in some of their high end console & stage form factors by now (particularly with the competition heating up) but they seem content with just making up new terms (SCM, RGE, blabla) to go with their rather tired seeming new offerings. Have you tried any Rolands or Kawais?

Have you tried any Rolands or Kawais? Yamaha is really great for creating new marketing terms . Thats why my importance lies on the key action. For me Roland is the worst brand for DP´s. They had this new "V-Grand Piano" to test and I found it awfull I allready have a Kawai CA-63. But I will not buy another Kawai. Still unsure between the 370 and 470.

If you can find a 370 and if its price is substantially lower than the 470, get the 370.
There isn't much difference between the two. The difference is mostly market-speak gibberish.
As for the ability to cover the display ... virtually all Clavinovas have that, including the cuurent 400-series and the preceding 300- and 200-series.

Substantially is approx. 650,- Euro I got a good deal today. For me the only real difference is the design, the weighting of the action and the possibilty to record musik directly to USB. For the rest I honestly do not care as it is mostly marketing crap.

Damning with faint praise? Not really - the cabinet design is the only aspect of the CLP-4xx range that I can comment on, as I've yet to play these instruments first hand. Cheers, James x

After having another "session" at the store I finally went with the CLP 370 for a very reasonable price. I could´nt find a difference in the action and the sound was the same for me also. Even the function "iafc"(?) sounded too good to be true, but has no effect at all For marketing Yamaha would get a perfect -10-! For bringing something new to the market a complete -fail- What of course does not mean that the instruments are not good. We will se how the 370 does in comparison to the CA63 as soon as I get it

After having over one week to play the CLP 370 at home it feels very different to the CA-63. Biggest issue is of course the action. The Kawai action is quiet, heavier and I always have the feeling that the keys are slightly wider Another big difference is the sound. The Kawai has a very nice, more mellow and warmer sound to it. The Yamaha sound is cleaner and brighter. The Yamaha action is loud and clunky. But with headphones it´s ok. I enjoyed the CA-63 touch more, even if the keys were heavier. With the lighter keys some things on the Yamaha are easier to play. But the biggest plus for me is the 3rd sensor on the Yamaha which for me is really noticable. Only for this option I would completely go for the Yamaha The NW action of the Yamaha is really the same as the standard GH3. The only advantage you have is that they sound much heavier and more massive when hitting them. They just don´t sound that "plasticy". And I like the wood for my personal feeling The buildquality on both DP´s is basically the same. Some minor differences but nothing really noticable. For me the Yamaha is a notch better. The pedal unit on the Kawai is better. THe Yamaha wants to be pressed all the way down to have the full sustain. The Kawai is more flexibel about that what I personally enjoyed more. You can really see it is a matter of personal choice. Finally my preferred instrument will be the 370 due mostly to the 3rd sensor and the type of music I play. Unfortunataly the 370 is only available in rosewood and not black.

I am happy that Yamaha released new CLP-4xx series, it made CLP-3xx more affordable, otherwise I cannot see much difference here. I will go with CLP-380.
