Hi.

I am new to this so please forgive me right away for breaking any rules or being unfamiliar with exactly how this works.

I stumbled upon a piano at an estate sale and couldn't refuse purchasing the piano. Not only because of the price, but it looked like it could be worth some value. I have been doing some research on the piano and I am finding mixed reviews about the brand.

It is an A.B. Chase. Upright, Player New York, Norfolk? The problem I am having is it is black and I can't find much on a black one of this brand. It doesn't look like it has been painted. I don't know a serial # yet as I won't be getting the table until Wed. It is in ok shape.

With as little information that I have to offer, does anyone know anything about the black table? Is it worth putting the cost of movers and "fixing"? It has been sitting in a basement for years. It sounds good to me (as far as tune), but again I know nothing about pianos.

Also, oddly enough in my research, I found another A.B. Chase piano for free. It has normal wear and tear, brown, upright, nothing intricate or any kind of design. Plain.

I figure, you can't beat a free piano and a cheap piano. Can anyone tell me if I have any kind of investment here? Thank you for understanding my lack of knowledge.

JeanelleK

I have both pianos now and the serial numbers are
52015
35961
I have also found out that they are NOT player pianos.
Can anyone tell me about these? Please and thanks.

Congratulations!

If nothing else, old pianos are a lot of fun...

I don't know much about player pianos, but I've read that the old A.B. Chase pianos were well made.

The thing about investing a lot of money in them is that you rarely get if back out of them unless you keep it and enjoy it yourself.

Good luck and post pictures with you can!!

Congrats on your piano!

I'm not familiar with that brand per se, but I have repaired many, many old uprights. Old pianos usually require a lot of work to get them back into good playing shape again, but if you love the tone, the cabinetry, and is in at least decent condition, it is usually (IMO) worth fixing up! It is nearly impossible for us to fully evaluate the condition from PW, but you can go onto PTG.ORG and search for a qualified technician in your area to evaluate your piano in person.

Expect around $100 for a tuning, unless it needs a pitch raise, in which you can expect to add another $30- $50. Given that your piano has been sitting for years, it may need at least one pitch raise.

Repairs can run anywhere from $50 to well over $1000. Hope it turns out well for you! Please keep us updated on how it turns out smile

What is the table you are talking about? The bench? Like this? I think it is a bench anyways.

Your best bet is to have it evaluated by a piano technician BEFORE paying to have it moved.

The overwhelming likelihood it that it isn't worth the cost of hauling.

A. B. Chase made very fine upright pianos. They often had sostenuto pedals and soft pedal compensation, probably terms that you would not be familiar with, but worthwhile for the serious pianist. Their players were fitted into standard-sized cases, no deeper than straight uprights. They came with a little booklet on how to take care of your piano, which I have never seen, but there is a holder for it inside the piano.

Having said that, I cannot think of one that I have ever seen in good shape. They were such good pianos that all of them I have seen were played to death! The best was one that had the action rebuilt, not after the rebuild, but after I rebuilt it again to redo the lousy job that someone else had done.

So that should explain the pitfalls of this piano. If the player mechanism is gone, the value of the piano without it is less than if it had never been a player. If it is present, rebuilding it would be an additional expense. You could easily spend several thousand dollars on it, and get an exceptional piano, but that is probably not what you originally budgeted for. Nor would shopping for a competent rebuilder, to avoid what my customers went through.

I'm sorry. I use to run a billiard co. and I am so used to saying pool "table". (Pianos and pool tables are typically moved by a professional so I got mixed up in my words)

Anyway, I finally got the pianos! If anyone can help with info on serial #'s
52015 and
35961
These are the pianos I received and I was wrong, they are NOT player pianos. The black one is beautiful and has neat carving on the "legs"? Or if anyone can guide me in a direction to find info on these serial numbers, that would be great!

I will post photos! And thanks for your responses!

Ca. 1908 and 1895, respectively, probably too early for player pianos.

Well I got the pianos. The black one is BEAUTIFUL but a little beat up.

I can't find ANYTHING on this piano but the year. I especially can't find anything on an AB Chase BLACK upright piano with the detailing this piano has...? I have spoken with a few local companies who don't have much info for me either, but might think I have something special on my hands. Don't want to get too excited before I find more info.

Not sure how to upload a photo but I will try to do so.
Again the beautiful black ab chase serial is -35961

You cannot upload photos here. You need to host them on a server, and then use the image tags so they will appear here. There is another part of Pianoworld where you can upload photos here. Once you have followed the instructions there, you will get an email with the address of the photo, and you can embed it in your message, using the fourth button on the full reply screen.

I like the looks of the brown one, and at least the keys are level. I hope you enjoy them very much. Would you keep us updated on their status? How they sound and feel, and what work you have done to them?

Beautiful pictures!!

Your little daughter is cute as can be!

I like the A B Chase the best. I almost bought an old A. B. Chase that looked very similar but it was located a little too far away.

Wishing you all the best!
