usually the program will wait for a midi message at which point you move a knob or push a dial and it should register. Which controller and which program.

Kontakt 4 - vintage organs. I was stumped on how to get learn cc to come up and I discovered right click. I got the answer elsewhere - right click on the function to be controlled and learn cc comes up. Then move the controller, etc. I want to control the drawbars, percussion etc etc on the fly.
