I feel the key action of my Yamaha CP50 a little stiff too. I think it's normal for a Yamaha.

The could be a littler stiffer when brand new. Floor models are usually beat on quite a bit, and with the CP33 having been out for a while, there's a good chance it's been on the floor a while, thus has been played a lot.

The CP33 has the same action as the CP300 and I really liked that action. The CP5's action while still very good is lighter than the CP33 which is a shame.

Which just goes to show again how subjective this all is. I like the CP5 action much better than the heavier CP33, which feels heavier than any quality acoustic piano I've ever played. In my experience, quality acoustics have relatively light actions.

Yeah anotherscott, I was surprised at how relatively light a new CFIII's action was, especially played back to back with my N1 sitting near it. I've found the Avantgrand's action to be heavier than most well regulated acoustics.

My sense is that it is one of the heavier actions out there. But it is extremely consistent in feel: once the key begins to descend, there is no unevenness, unlike some other keyboards I have tried, including some uprights.
Also, I think volume matters. At louder volumes, keyboards give the impression of being lighter than when the volume is low. Perhaps the CP33 in the shop had it amped with the volume up high?

The CP50 definitely does not feel like the CP5. If you want a lighter action in the CP50-ish price range, there's the Roland FP-7F, which has a terrific action. If you want to spend less, there's the Yamaha MOX8, which has a lighter action than the CP33, but is not the same calibre as the CP5 or Roland. It's actually a workstation rather than a stage piano, but it happens to have (IMO) a very nice piano sound, along with a lot of other nice features, and a low carrying weight of 32.6 lbs.

I don't know why anyone would want a light (or lighter) action. I like to have the feeling of some resistance when playing.
While it might be great to have an extremely light action for a performance, for practicing I'd want a Mack truck.

The CP 33 action is heavy, but similar to many acoustic pianos regarding feel. That is a plus in my opinion.
The only DP action I like better is the Avantgrand.

I may need to go to a Piano Store and play a few real models I think that's a good idea. And don't be afraid to play the most expensive ones. ;-)

Of course there could be something wrong causing your particular CP33 to be to stiff, just can't tell online!

The only DP action I like better is the Avantgrand. Minor correction, but the AvantGrand has a real grand action, supposedly the dane that's inside the C series Yamaha grands, minus the felt hammers.

i just had the action in my p250 replaced about 30 days ago with a new one under warranty. The new action is the same as you have - it's a little different design than the original. My original became a lot looser after 8 years of use. But I remember the p250 was pretty heavy feeling when they first came out - probably more than than this action.
The new one feels stiffer - but is already starting to loosen up some. I think it will loosen up more over time. I do know what you mean, but I think yamaha has lightened there actions over the last 10 years some. For comparison, I think the p155 piano is a little lighter feeling, but the piano sound is not the same.
Hope that helps.

the earlier p series (p80,120,250) and i think motif classic has some bad plastic in the keys or something like that in a certain batch of them. Anyhow my particular piano was the 1st year they came out and qualified by the serial number. I didn't know about the warranty but when I called to see how I could fix a sticky key they told me about it. I had to pay labor though. Yamaha really stands behind their stuff.
