This thread is a perfect example of why many of us rarely visit the Pianist Corner section.
All too often the threads can be described as a bunch of elitist snobs bitching about a different style because they don't personally like it, claiming that it is trash and the people that listen to it are not much more than morons.
I have no opinions about Lady Gaga myself but I am certainly honest enough to admit that there are some very talented musicians out there even though I personally do not like their particular genre.
At least she can play and writes her own material which is more than the vast majority of "pop stars".
Just because you don't particularly like her material means absolutely squat.
I can guarantee you that there are far far more people that think your style of music is crap rather than the other way around.
Although numbers and popularity mean nothing of course but your worthless opinion is simply less popular than their worthless opinion.
What Lady Gaga does she does extremely well.

Lady Gaga... She does what she does, and if she's crap, she's crapping her way to the bank with millions and millions of dollars while I sit here paying to go to music school.

I'm with Brendan on this one. It's just taking a theme and making a fugue out of it.

Although, I would hazard to guess that it's more musically deep than anything she could do with it, though, right? smile

That depends whether you think complexity and depth are synonymous.

I think there are definitely some parallels between the two.

I don't get into her, but I sometimes wish I could dance like Chris Brown.

Actually, we'll go even higher than that... I wish I could dance like MJ!

Hey, I'm allowed to have opinions just like you. If she writes her own stuff, whatever. Fine. People will like anything that's popular. Plus I wasn't talking about purely just her... A lot of pop "culture" is pretty crappy nowadays, you have to admit. And I don't just listen to classical.. Just so we're clear. And if that classifies me as a snob - I'm sort of allowed to be one, since I play classical music for a living.

No I do not have to admit! Your opinion is your own. You're allowed to have opinions but if you broadcast them in a public forum you're not allowed to complain about people criticising them.

It's not difficult to avoid the Lady Gagas of the world, just don't listen to them. It's much harder to avoid the opinions of narrow minded self important snobs.

what are you talking about? if you think considering that as crap requires being an elitist you need to give it a thought. and to look up the term "relativism" in the dictionary, while you re at it.

yes, you may like lady gaga, and you don t need to be an idiot to do so. we all have the right to incur in bad taste, and we do use that right. even "elitists" like me, sometimes, we fall off our horses and get down to earthly level ...

"it s good just because a lot of people like it". that s the lamest argument one can find. well, that and the oone about the money she s making. so? since when is sucess a guarantee of value? even if she wasn t getting paid like she is, i d still say she sucks. it s mc donalds music. and if she actually has musical training, that makes it even worse.

It's not that you consider it crap, its the way you are going about expressing your opinion.

"we all have the right to incur in bad taste"
It's YOUR opinion that it is in bad taste.
You mention relativism, and then carry on talking as if you are objectively correct in your judgement of a particular type of music.

Lady Gaga's acoustic versions are pretty good, there's a catchy one of poker face (i think) somewhere on youtube. I'm not a fan of Lady Gaga really, but not all modern music is that bad.

exactly. because i truly believe that in this clear case, (and in most when it comes to any form of art) relativism is just an excuse for mediocrity. also, i really cant see how anyone can feel offended by my comments here. in fact i ve been called a bitching elitist and i dont. i think someone with that kind of presence in the media should be providing something more than fast food music, silly sttereotypical statements and weird outfits. no big deal though, she s getting paid, her fans can enjoy her 24/7, and i am, not yet, forced to listen to her glorious output. all happy i guess.

Same song but this is the version i was talking about. It's an acoustic piano which makes it better!! And plus, she has a pretty cool bow in her hair grin
