Hello Folks,

I'm a new poster to the forum but I've been 'lurking' it for a few years. Usually the information I'm looking for can be found by going through the old threads. I appreciate all the advice and info I've learned on here...so a belated 'Thank you' to all.

Here's my question...
I've recently found a private sale late 70's 5' Baldwin but the fallboard stencil reads "Baldwin Piano Co" instead of just the normal "Baldwin".
Does anyone have any knowledge in regard to this?
I've never seen it before.

Thank you
Sean 'sausage fingers'

Hi Glupiter, and welcome to the Piano World forums!

You know, you may have a point about the Baldwin decal… makes you wonder if something has been altered or is not original.

It’s kind of like those sellers who try to pass off a D. H. Baldwin as a Baldwin; there is as much difference in the two pianos as night and day.

Good luck!

Rick

The piano was most likely refinished in the past whereas the refinisher did not put on the correct decal. It is most likely a lower quality subsidiary of Baldwin as in Howard,Ellington,Hamilton etc. That is not even a fallboard decal on it's own. Part of an expert refinish is applying the original decal or decal(s).

I can always tell the experience level in a Steinway restoration if they applied the wrong era soundboard decal. If one is unsure, better to put nothing as Steinway sometimes did or didn't.

I just realized the piano in question is of the late seventies. I've seen Steinway or Baldwin fallboard decals and plate lettering on NONAME cheap pianos on occasion. Usually a rude awakening when relayed to the owner. I remember that fake plate cast "B" on a mystery so called Baldwin piano. It shot across the room when we tried to scrape the gold letter. grin

Ah yes, I've read that story on here while I was trying to dig for some more info. That's what I'm worried about...

I'm going to look at it tomorrow.

I don't think they'll let me at it with the screwdriver though!

I once asked if I could remove the foot board of an old upright piano that was for sale so I could look at the bridges and the owner told me no... said I could disassemble it after I bought it.

I decided I was no longer interested...

To the best of my knowledge I believe that we had 6 logos over our history and not one of them read "piano company" at the end.

I looked at it today
It had a Howard plate and the "Baldwin Piano Co" logo on the fallboard.

It also had in one area 2 drywall screws countersunk in the soundboard down to the ribs and underneath it had four screws going up in each rib on either side of a long crack. There was also a wedge between the frame and the board.

I passed...
