As long as I can remember, my parents have had this piano sitting in the living room, largely unplayed: According to the serial number (X-18895) and this database, the piano was made in 1905. The cabinet has some wear and tear (for example the nearest leg had one veneer piece ripped off by a young child that looked suspiciously like a younger version of me ), but the working bits all seem in order, and my parents had it "successfully" tuned 3-4 years ago. Is this an interesting piano? I doubt we'd ever sell it, but we might consider getting it fixed up for my kid if it were worth saving. If these are a dime a dozen, and not interesting even in mint condition, then I'll look at other options. But if this has any historical value beyond my own sentimentality, I'd like to know! Thanks!

Love the case!!! It sure does look interesting, and since it is still able to be played to quite an extent, I think it will end up a very playable piano. They are probably not 'a dime a dozen', so It think it is worth fixing up. and since it is still tunable, there is no point in replacing the pinblock, and maybe not anything else (if you are lucky) I think it is a very nice piano. good luck!

You might want to get it regulated if the keys don't feel quite right. The wood, felt, and leathers inside could be out of place, swollen, worn, etc.

Thanks for the replies! My emotional side was hoping that this old girl was worth saving; it's good to hear that it's worth looking into.
Can anyone recommend a reputable technician/restorer in Los Angeles's South Bay area?
What's the approximate guesstimate range of costs for a regulation and tune-up, assuming that things are just old and not broken? I know the answer is "it depends," but I'm just wondering about the range of costs.
I just rented a digital piano for my kid, and will probably end up buying one 3-6 months from now, but if we ever do the remodel and expansion we've been envisioning (perhaps 2-3 years out), I might have room for a real piano in my house then.

Look up Bruce Stevens in Bellflower. One of the best.

I hope it is in good shape for you - it is a beautiful case and if it doesn't need more than some regulation work and voicing, it could be a fine 'investment'. Let us know how it goes!
