I'm asking because I'm building a stand for my new DP today and I have to decide if I want to make the second shelf(which holds my computer monitor and HS80M studio monitors) more recessed or not.
My thinking is to leave them exposed so I can feel the sound vibrations from the external speakers while relying on my monitors for the bulk of my volume.
Any thoughts ?

The HS80M is far superior to the FP-7F's internal speakers (IMO). I leave the internals off. I did try comparing them initially and also tried with both on at various levels, but finally decided that internals off was best. If your HS80Ms are too close to a wall or corner, then the room interaction could change things considerably ... mine is set up far from any walls. BTW, the HS10W really works well to fill in the bottom.

It would be difficult to move my monitors from the wall due to space considerations. How far away do you have yours ?

Speaker placement, how they are aimmed and their distance from a wall make about as much difference as the brand of speaker, maybe even more. remember the sound from the speakers goes all over in different directions, only a tiny fraction of it hits your ear directly, much of the sound bounces first then hits your ears. The distences, range of distances and the material it bounces off makes, like I said more difference then the brand of speaker.
So,.. You don't just place the monitors on a self where ever they happen to fit. You need to work it out, mostly by experiment. Do you point them inward? outward? or straight up like most built-in speakers? "Up" is actually a reasonable option. You can adjust the amount of bass you hear by adjusting the distance from a wall or corner.
And then the height. In almost all cases you'd like the tweeter to be about ear level when you are seated.
Your monitors are much better than the internal speakers. But I think the best optionis to have both on but as your built-in speakers point up don't have anything but the ceiling above them and they are designed to have a hard wall in back so leave that clear.
Rather then a shelf for a computer monitor why not a wall mounted "arm" for then you can adjust the position and visually from a design perspective you have less "mass" or bulk as the arm is mostly hidden
As for the monitors, small floor stands with adjustable height are ideal, then you can move then around and put them in the exact best place.
It is never good to place a speaker on a self unless you can at least overhang the front baffle so the baffle and shelf don't meet at a 90 degree corner. If a monitor must use a shelf at least place a large foam blck uner the monitor and pull it as far forward as you can, stands are better.

far_star, My left monitor is about 5' from the wall. Here is a picture of my setup: Music Room You can't see the Sub, which is on the floor, centered up on the FP-7F (the Steinway is in the background - also hard to see in this picture). With this setup and sitting in front of the FP-7F, the sound is mostly near-field.

bbent, Thank you for sharing your setup. Very impressive. I had my monitors on stands similar to yours but I placed them on my DIY DP stand to "feel" the sound though my fingers as I played. I think that was probably a mistake and will go back to the stands. At the very least I will try to move them from the wall by at least a few inches. I am building a new stand to house my computer monitor, mixer and lamp. I will take your advice into consideration. far_star, My left monitor is about 5' from the wall.
