Ok, was tuning a little Gordon Laughead spinet today. I noticed it had a strange kind of reverb sound to it that didn't sound quite right, but at first didn't really think anything of it. Then my knee bumped the kick panel and I heard a rattle and more reverb. Curious, I pulled the kick panel and look what I found.

You'll see that at the end of the bass bridge is a threaded machine bolt. Now, take a look at the next picture to see what's on the back of the kick panel.

A block of wood has been added to it, along with a cupboard door magnet. When the panel is in place, the bolt coming out of the bass bridge contacts the block of wood that's mounted to the kick panel. You can see that there are coil springs attached to the block that run the length of the panel, causing that 60's style spring reverb sound. I played in bands growing up in the 70's and remember those old spring reverbs in amps and organs.

Weird, eh?

Turned the kickboard into a kind of second soundboard. With reverb!

At least whoever came up with that was a creative type, and smarter than most, with an understanding. Could be Mr. Moog's piano or Peavey's, Fender, Hammond, etc... or any other person looking for a buzz. I think it is ingenious.

Check this old thread of mine.

Be sure to look at the picture in the first post.

Creative type, but not very smart.

wink

Did you discuss this modification with the current owner? Wondering if they're aware of it, or if they may want it removed.
