I only have access to Schimmel grand 2-3 days/week and want a good 88 key digital that will give me the closest touch. can be a slab, but most important is similar touch to good acoustic piano.

Budget? Portability?

The Roland RD-700NX is worth checking out. I remain very satisfied with the musical qualities of the SuperNatural technology, and I like the feel of the PHA III action, especially the depth of the key travel and its replication of the aftertouch of a grand action.

I've not played the Kawais, but if you can find a dealer, you probably ought to try them.

THere are quite a few to pick from. Pianos with reasonably good key actions start at about $1,000. If yu can afford $2,000 then there is a huge selection. A passable, entry level model starts at $500.

What you are going to have to do is go to one of the bog chain music stores, like Sam Ash or Guitar Center and bring some good headphones and play some of the pianos from Yamaha, Kawai and Roland. Take notes. Later look up on-line which pianos had what actions inside. They tend to re-use the same action in different models. Later choose a piano with the action and features you want.


I would not even set a budget until you have tried a few pianos. You may be happy with a $500 Casio

The way to look at this is that a digital piano is not a poor copy of an acoustic. It's another keyboard instrument that is related to an acoustic piano. They will not be the same.

I agree with the suggestions above. If you are spending in the $2,000-$3,000 range, the Roland FP-7F/RD-700NX and Kawai MP10 are worth looking at seriously. If spending more and want the furniture, look into the Yamaha Clavinova CLP-400/CVP-500 series, Roland HP-307/LX-10F and Kawai CA93 (which is the king of digital pianos when it comes to authenticity. The CA93 even has a real acoustic soundboard.

If spending excess of $5,000 look no further than the Yamaha AvantGrand N1...I can personally vouch for this one. It, along with the AvantGrand N2/N3 have real grand piano action, right out of Yamaha's C series grands. It's pricey, but for an entirely non-acoustic piano, the AvantGrands are king.
