Nicely done, Koji. I especially liked the anecdote about Kapell threatening bodliy harm to a critic who panned Horowitz. Reminds me of the story about Harry Truman doing likewise to Paul Hume, the longtime music critic of the Washington Post, when Hume had some unkind things to say about Truman's daughter's singing. Personally, I think Kapell had a better excuse for his outrage.

Thank you Emanuel! As Anna Lou (laughing all the time telling me the story) relayed it, she literally threw herself in front of Willy, and Istomin held the critic (Jay Harrison) at bay and they beat a hasty exit. What a scene that must have been!

Great interview. Glad to hear you're a fellow Benno fan.

You have to get to the point where you trust your own instincts. You learn very quickly that sometimes you have to sit there and just take it. But eventually, you need to trust your instincts – that which makes your playing unique, and you have to go with that. Whether it’s repertoire choices, freedom or tempo choices, you have to go with it. You need to please yourself, because you can’t please everyone. That’s really the only advice – not very practical, but it’s important.

THANK you for that!

This is wonderful, Koji! Great, insightful stuff -- I love Kapell's playing as well. His recording of Chopin's Third Sonata is the benchmark for this piece imo.
So nice to see you are getting this well-deserved attention.
