Hello!

Has anyone seen this documentary about building one Steinway piano? It's called "Note by Note: The Making of Steinway L1037" and looks really interesting.

Cool! Thanks for sharing smile.

I haven't seen it but I find piano construction so fascinating.

Yeah, I've seen this. It makes one appreciate the time and dedication that goes into the construction of a grand piano.

It makes me feel for those that toiled for years on end looking for the right design. I'm sure there were lots of missteps along the way.

Just finished watching it. I'm amazed on all the little details in work put into the pianos. And I also learned how good of customer service you get when you want to pay the price smile

very good documentary!

There was an earlier book that followed the construction of a single Steinway grand piano as a narrative framework for talking about piano construction and the history of Steinway. I don't believe it was really related to the video documentary (the book followed a different serial number during construction).

Barron, James. (2007). Piano: The making of a Steinway concert grand. New York, NY: Times Press.

Interesting. But what does the needling do?

Do you mean needling the hammers? Needling the face of the hammer softens the felt a little and makes the tone when the hammer strikes the string a little softer and less harsh. This is a common voicing technique on new pianos to shape the tone to the players taste and to make the sound uniform across all notes. The hammer felt also gets packed down and hardened after the piano has been played a lot, so needling is sometimes used to restore a pleasing tone to older hammers.

When I first got my new grand, the tech made three trips to my house over the first few months for voicing and regulation work to get the hammers and the action just right.
