Where are all the grand pianos?

I'm new here - sort of. I've been reading the forum for months, reading Fine, etc., but I'm getting serious about a new piano and some help would be great. I'm in the Houston area and I've been disappointed in the availability of new piano brands in the "middle market." I've checked out Boston, Kawai, and Yamaha locally. The Houston area seems to have dealers that cover the lower end Pearl River, Haillun, Henry Miller, etc, and the higher end, like Steinway, Bechstein, Mason & Hamlin, etc. But aside from the three I mentioned (Boston, Kawai, Yamaha) the middle pianos seem to be missing, like Estonia, Bohemia, Petrof, Knabe, Young Chang (Albert Weber), Schimmel, Pramberger, etc etc...I can find more in Dallas and maybe in Austin, but I'd prefer to stay closer to home when I buy. Should I travel to try pianos? Austin is 3 hours, Dallas is 4. Just seems like Houston, the largest city in the South, ought to have more selection.
5'-10" is about the largest I can go. Any suggestions for pianos that would compete with, say, the RX-2 or the Boston 178? So far I liked the 178 a just little better than the RX-2, but that changes with my mood. The 178 is at the high end of my budget, although I'm flexible, and I'm not in a hurry.

If you want to broaden your choices of the pianos "in the middle" then you'll have to travel and see what is out there, be able to try the different pianos to find a tonal profile and feel of the action that you prefer. People do this all of the time when their locale doesn't offer enough selections to try. AR

I just searched on Knabe's website and came up with Forshey Piano Co. They list that they are the dealer for: STEINWAY & Sons Boston Essex Kohler & Campbell Wm. Knabe & Co. SEILER Petrof Estonia Are they not in business anymore? The site just says they are closing one location. Maybe you can get a deal on what they have in stock.

I've been there and they essentially are a "Steinway Family" dealer these days. No Knabe's that I recall. They had the "new" indonesian Seiler and Boston, plus tons of Steinways.
I travel a lot, and I've looked in many places, although I haven't taken the time to play much at the distant stores as I am concerned about post-purchase service. Regardless, I do like the Bostons and Kawais. The Kawai place has a Shigeru for 28.5K (5'-10) which is a great piano for the price, but it's an ugly color (thus they are having a hard time moving it). "Others in my house" aren't convinced the price is worth living with its look.

FYI - A dealer in Houston who carried Estonia and Schimmel went out of business about 4 years ago.

Surely they can get you a Shigeru in the finish you want. The included MPA visit at your home will further improve the touch and tone to your liking (whether you knew you needed it or not ).

Unfortunately you might have to take a drive to try some other instruments out, but I highly recommend doing this.
In the end you may choose something that you have already played, but you'll know you got the best choice for you.
Good Luck - and keep us posted,

Unfortunately, I'm thinking it is getting harder and harder to find real pianos in real piano stores... the one and only smalish piano store near me is a dealer for Young Chang and Story and Clark. She usually keeps a couple of Bergmann baby grands and uprights in stock, but not any more. If you want to buy a grand piano from her, you have to more or less order it first.
Someone told me that the only thing keeping her business afloat is the music and accessories she sells and the music lessons side of the business.
If I wanted to find a piano store with several grand painos on the showroom floor, I'd have to travel at least 50 miles or more.
I'd love to see a real piano store on every corner...
Rick

Without Internet (and PW) I might not even be aware of the myriad choices out there and I might have already bought a piano, but knowing these things are available SOMEWHERE makes me less apt to buy soon...
If I order a piano are there certain makes that are more likely to be similar to the one I try at the store? Flip-side question: is a piano that has been the floor model for a common piano(like a C2, RX2, etc) a greater risk in terms of reliability? There are some big discounts available here for such pianos.

I’m no expert, but typically, a floor model that has been on the showroom floor for a while will likely have been played more and tuned more times, improving the tuning stability, than one fresh out of the crate. It may, however, have a few more fingerprints, but it is not likely to be less reliable than one fresh out of the crate. Good luck Rick

Around here, floor models do get kept in tune, but they don't get played to death. They probably get fewer keystrokes per month than one in the home of someone who plays. I'd say it's a plus, go for it.

Well, I know you're probably kidding, but since I'm not in a hurry, I plan to seek out pianos when I travel over the next month or two. Problem is, I'm likely to be in a better mood away from the office and automatically will like something better in San Francisco than I would in Houston.
Another challenge is satisfying four people in the house. The kids play, but I pay! I'll have final "say-so" but I want them to love it, too!
The more I think about it - this all seems next to impossible. Maybe I'll keep the ol' Outtatuhn and spend my money on a Corvette (down payment)...That's what I'm looking for - a piano that gets under my skin. Is that possible on a C/RX-type budget?

Will you get to the LA area? There are lots of places to check out here.

Go where the money is...
Here in Georgia, north Atlanta is the highest income area in the state... that's where most of the piano stores are. Cooper pianos is right next door to the new Steinway dealer, Steinway Piano Galleries... I've been to both stores; nice folks.
New York City... another high income area, for the most part, with Wall Street and all. Lots of piano stores there too.
Happy hunting!
Rick

Interesting -- Out here a lot are in the valley, where land is cheaper, and they have large warehouses, like Past Perfect, and Hollywood Piano. With the entertainment industry, they're more geared for working musicians than the rich.

I never really considered looking for an area - no matter how far - where there might be an unusual concentration of dealers. An obvious thought, I suppose, but my paradigm has been to find a piano locally, or at least in TX. It's potentially a lifelong investment, so I can talk myself into some added time/travel/expense, I suppose. NY? LA? of course, if I go too crazy traveling and searching I could spend enough to have bought the Steinway my daughter likes.

I talked to one dealer who said he had a customer who traded pianos about every two years... like clock work. I was interested in one of the "traded in" pianos when he told me the story... of course, it could have been just a sales pitch. Rick

Sounds like great fun (?) to trade pianos frequently, but it seems like an awfully expensive way to pursue your music.
